📖BENEATH THE SURFACE: May 27

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I can’t believe I get to say this: my debut novel, BENEATH THE SURFACE, is coming out from @podiumentertainment!

So, so, SO much gratitude for my incredible agent @claire_m_harris at @helmliterary for championing my work and cheering me on every step of the way. I appreciate you more than you know!

Somehow, despite writing an entire book, I’m struggling to find the words to capture how much this moment means to me. I’ve wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember — with starry-eyed confidence as a kid, with dreamy aspirations as a teenager, with nonchalant certainty as an undergrad. Then I entered the “real world” and thought maybe it was time to let the dream go.

But the dream wouldn’t let go of me. Nine years ago, I decided to give it another try. It was nine years of cautiously opening my laptop or scribbling an idea in a notebook, of starting and stopping, of getting serious, of chickening out, of trying again, of maybe getting TOO serious (hello 30-day writing sprints), of wondering if there would ever be one of these wonderful, silly, beautiful little deal announcements with my name on it.

And here we are. I truly cannot wait for you to read BENEATH THE SURFACE.

Now, as per tradition: let’s cheers 🥂 by @piperyoutzy

They key to maintaining adult friendships is loosely structured recurring potlucks.

We’ve cooked our way through most of @carochambers’s cookbook this year and had so much fun doing it. Important tip: bring Tupperware so you can bring home a bunch of leftovers!!

Would you start a cookbook book club? And if so, what cookbook are you starting with? by @piperyoutzy

I could’ve listened to this @literarycleveland Inkubator panel all day! There were so many more quotes I wanted to capture, but I couldn’t write fast enough to keep up with their brilliance.

Thanks to @rachel.cargle, @quartezh, @marievibbert, @writsonia, and @nahomyslibrary for moderating this phenomenal session! by @piperyoutzy

Awards ceremony. Author readings. Make-your-own bouquets. @anisfieldwolf, you sure know how to throw a party 🎉

AWBA is the only juried American book prize focusing on works that address racism and diversity. Now in its 91st year and led by the brilliant, gracious, and “seemingly unflappable” (as one recipient described her) @iamkortney, what an incredible honor to have this book prize call Cleveland home 💛

Congratulations to this year’s winners: @benchansfield, @sarahazizawrites, Carrie R. Moore, @_gbengaadesina, and @nellpainter! by @piperyoutzy

Only 364 more days until the next best night of the year ❤️‍🔥

I spent last night with dear friends, fellow writers, and some of my very favorite people to celebrate 10 years of @literarycleveland. I got to sit amongst so many folks who are just like me: who’ve been able to cultivate their writing practice and achieve lifelong dreams because of Literary Cleveland. We heard how this organization started with a crazy idea to get writers together at the library a decade ago. We clapped until our hands went numb and listened to beautiful words about community and impact from @kishanicolefosterpoet, @kenschneck, @matt.weinkam, @dchaon, @writsonia, and @thrity_umrigar. We watched the sun set over Lake Erie. We celebrated. We were collectively reminded that our voices and our stories are powerful. We toasted to the past decade and dreamt about the decade to come.

Oh, and we took a whole bunch of silly pictures in the photo booth, of course.

Cheers to ten years of Literary Cleveland. I really can’t wait to see what the next ten bring. by @piperyoutzy
