What was the situation?
We were three acro pilots flying to the box in very calm morning conditions. We played around a little bit after breaking off and preparing for the run. Before every run, I like to do practice grabs on both of my reserve handles to get the movement into muscle memory. I decided to let go of the brakes to do the practice grabsdue to the calm conditions. Right as I released the brakes, my glider went into a full frontal collapse. After collapsing, I got a cravat and the glider started autorotating. I was still high and had a bad box, so I decided not to throw and try to safe the situation. Because I wanted to grab my brakes quickly, I accidentally ripped off the elastic on my left toggle and had to control the rotation by pulling my D-lines. After that, I managed to clear/pump out the cravat, but I had to land with only one brake, while the other was slightly pulled and tangled in the upper gallery lines.

Why did the glider collapse?
My glider is in very used condition, but this shouldn't affect it too much. It is worth noting that I always had the feeling that the old Joker was really fast for its size, which probably makes it more collapsy. I've probably had five frontals in total now, but to be fair, the rest were all in conditions where I would expect a glider to collapse.
The main reason was probably a tandem that was spiraling in front of us. It is hard to tell for sure, but I would estimate that I had at least 300 meters of distance to the tandem. I suspect that the rotor created by the spiral caused the collapse. Both pilots who flew with me were also off the brakes and felt that the air was really smooth.

What did I do wrong/right?
Is letting go of the brakes ever a smart idea? No. Is it okay to let go of the brakes for a moment to check your rescue handles with enough altitude and in calm conditions? In my opinion, yes. Up to now, I didn't realize that the wake turbulence created by a spiral can stay in the air for so long.

THANK YOU SWITZERLAND🫶🫶🫶

The one week we got to spend in switzerland was absolutely epic to say the least. The lines we flew were suuuuper fun and had just the right amount of technicality to them. But more importantly I'm really grateful for all the cool people we got to meet. Big thank you to all of you guys it was amazing🙏🫶

This line was the most special to me because after I saw the video of Jamie Lee flying it back in the day I knew I had to do this one day. I will upload the whole video on youtube with all the emotions after the flight and you'll get what I mean😋 Thx again @outrageous for taking us to this beautiful spot.🙏🙏🙏
