Knowing, forgetting, remembering and forgetting again. Acrylic on canvas, 2024

I was thinking about birth and rebirth and how women’s bodies are kind of like prophecies. That made me think about Selkies which are my favourite mythical creature. They’re basically seals but will come to shore and peel off their skin to run around naked as beautiful women. Often in the folklore, men will steal their seal skin, trapping them on land. Sometimes they have babies with the men that trapped them and their child finds their mothers selkie skin, puts it on and gets called back to the water (it’s like karmic debt ; the father loses his child just as he stole his wife’s skin).

The tattooed words are a mix of my own and other people’s stories, poems, song lyrics etc

Painting from 2024 pregnancy series when I was having dreams of a soul that was circling me.

Ongoing obsession with my tummy.

Science + religion tries to convince us that magic isn’t real. Pregnant bodies disrupt that regime. Remind us of the unexplainable + unimaginable.

There was a dream I had once. A dream about a little tiny baby, it was kind of like a fairy or a mermaid and it was so small I had to cradle it in my hand to protect it. Sometimes it would go in my pocket but I was worried about squishing it a lot so mainly it would stay in my hand. It was so adorable and all mine and the goal of the dream was to carry it and nurture it and help it survive. I wish I could remember what happened next properly but I can’t exactly… i think it was something bad. I found out it was really sick and dying and that was why I felt so fiercely attached and protective over it, or worse, I found out it wasn’t really my baby and I had just stumbled upon it and had to try and reunite it with its real mother. But on our journey I had become attached and felt that it was mine. I could’t imagine a life without it now that I had it. It was perfect and pure and it rarely said anything just made cute noises and slept and sometimes smiled. I woke up before getting to the end of the story. I hope I’ll dream the rest of the story soon. by @pippi4eva
