Inspired by the @davidharewood documentary “Psychosis and Me”, and in support of Mental Health Awareness Week, I would like to share a story of my own. A decade ago, for a horrifically dark but thankfully short period of time, I became acutely, clinically psychotic. Psychosis doesn’t appear with a bang, it builds slowly and patiently - from generalised anxiety to panic attacks to morbid fear, until the brain finally snaps. At this point the mind and body are no longer one. As the days pass, as you fall deeper into the disorder of your mind, you begin to neglect the body. No sleep, no food. And so the brain chemistry slips further. Thoughts are no longer yours to have - they are thrust upon you, then ripped away. When your mind has cracked in this way, it cannot find its own way back. I was incredibly lucky to have almost instant access to the best medical support on offer, and the love and care of my family. But to face family and friends in this state is no small challenge, for you or for them. Perhaps the most devastating effect of psychosis is that the sufferer doesn’t want to be seen by those that know and love them best. To have those eyes most familiar to you peer into your own and find that you are no longer there is almost unbearably painful. As Harewood’s documentary shows, NHS Triage teams now intervene at an early stage to bring sufferers of psychosis together, so they can share their experience and understand that they are not alone. The NHS does great things, but the most essential work must come at a cultural level. Increased public awareness, understanding and empathy is the greatest support we can offer our fragile minds. I hope in sharing my story you might be encouraged to talk to your friends if you are feeling anxious, or you sense anxiety in them. You can find David Harewood’s documentary on BBC iplayer.

I’m running the Hackney half marathon with some pals in support of Restore, a brilliant mental health charity in Oxford that Floss Waters worked for and loved. Please donate what you can in memory of Floss so that Restore can continue its brilliant work.

Breweries are getting crafty with the stories they tell and the images they project. But don’t be fooled. Help us @forestroadbrew tell it how it really is; support our campaign to make London #craftconscious https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/make-london-craftconscious LINK ALSO IN BIO taken in Forest Road Brewing Company by @pippotomassi
