Yosemite translates to “those who kill.”

The people who lived in the valley called it Ahwahnee, “the mouth,” and called themselves the Ahwahneechee.

In 1851 the Mariposa Battalion, a militia of miners, rode in to capture and drive them out. Lafayette Bunnell thought the valley needed a name, so he picked the word he kept hearing the Ahwahnee yelling as he and others attacked. His commander translated it as grizzly bear. Nobody checked.

Wear the translation. Link in story.

After spotting the merch team for @angieforfl had updated the Richard Nixon buttons for the campaign, I felt compelled to update some posters and a billboard that I didn’t even have to edit that much.

Best of luck to Angie this November. 🫡 by @pippyle2

The “Crimson Record” report published by JULIAN found that over 70 modern-day lynching cases have taken place across TX, LA, MS, AL, TN, GA, and FL since 2000. Defining a modern-day lynching (MDL) as “a multiple perpetrator homicide, targeting a group or individual,
driven by race, gender identity, or other bias with the intent of causing community terror or carrying out an extrajudicial homicide for a perceived threat or wrongdoing,” experts noted that lynching is “one of the hardest hate crimes to prove,” and is often ruled as a suicide initially.

“A Crimson Record exposes the long-buried truth about modern-day lynchings, calling these crimes exactly what they are despite systemic attempts to erase and deny them,” said JULIAN founder Jill Collen Jefferson. “Lynching has never disappeared — it has adapted, hidden behind silence and indifference.”

“Clutch City Craft” Close Look: Philip Pyle, II & Barnett Newman

As we enter the final days of “Clutch City Craft,” HCCC’s groundbreaking exhibition examining the craft traditions and material cultures that have shaped Houston into one of the nation’s most formidable centers of making, let’s take a deep dive into a piece by Philip Pyle, II combining two of the city’s most famous visual icons: Barnett Newman’s “Broken Obelisk,” and the stylish drama of Houston’s car culture.

In “Broken Obelisk Elbows,” Phillip (@pippyle2) reimagines Barnett Newman’s “Broken Obelisk” [1963- 7], installed outside the @rothko_chapel and dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. in the wake of his 1968 assassination. Initially purchased by Dominique and John de Menil as a gift to the city of Houston for display outside City Hall, the gift was rejected on the basis of its dedication to the slain civil rights leader. Undeterred, the de Menils moved forward, donating the sculpture and 14 Mark Rothko paintings to the Institute of Religion and Human Development, housing them in a newly-built structure and reflecting pool that would ultimately become the Rothko Chapel.

Crowning Newman’s austere form with gleaming “elbows,” or “swangas,” Philip subverts minimalism to exert personal and regional ownership over how monumentality can look and move in a city like Houston. Conceived by the artist as part of “New Cities, New Monuments,” a 2019 exhibition series presented by @highlinenyc, “Broken Obelisk Elbows” merges civic sculpture with street customization. Erupting from the side of Newman’s obelisk, Philip’s swangas celebrate Houston’s history of SLAB (slow, loud, and bangin’) car culture, energetically taking on the challenge of capturing the city’s dynamic essence in an inert object.

For “Clutch City Craft,” we are proud to showcase not only Philip’s initial “Broken Obelisk Elbows” print from 2019, but a custom-made 3D-printed maquette fabricated by @reubencheeks. Be sure to come by and see these wonderful objects in person before the exhibition closes on Saturday, August 8th!
