Capa desse domingo do @washingtonpost!

On the front page of this Sunday’s @washingtonpost! A major victory is within reach: all that remains is President Lula’s signature for the Guarani of Jaraguá to regain their ancestral territory. Brazil’s smallest Indigenous Territory, surrounded by the largest city in the Americas.

This is a story I’ve dedicated six years to, deeply honored by the openness and permission of the entire community @richard_wera_mirim @poty_rembiapo @anthony_verissimo, and by the partnership of @caroool_lopes @camivieirax, as well as the support of @natgeosociety, @catchlight.io and @thealexiagrants.

2022 CatchLight Global Fellow Rafael Vilela (@piravilela) embodies the ethos of long-term documentary practice. His celebrated series Forest Ruins, which follows the Guarani Mbyá people living within the boundaries of São Paulo, won first place at Pictures of the Year Latin America (@poy_latam) this year.

The recognition is based on a practice built not on spectacle, but on steadfast collaboration. Vilela spent six years building trust within a community situated at the fragile intersection of Indigenous land, city expansion, and environmental degradation. His recognition affirms that slow photography often yields deep truths.

🏆 Pictures of the Year Latin America (@poy_latam) has awarded first place in its long-term projects category to "Forest Ruins," a project by Rafael Vilela (@piravilela), a 2022 CatchLight Global Fellow. For nearly six years, Vilela has been documenting the everyday life and resistance of the Guarani Mbyá indigenous community in São Paulo, Brazil.

Vilela joined us for a conversation about his recent exhibition, "Nhemboaty: Clash of Worlds," what’s next for the project, and his larger vision for indigenous stories in Latin America to reach global audiences: “The Nhemboaty experience was incredibly powerful and reminded me of the reasons I began this journey and of the deeper meaning photography can hold: to break through bubbles and connect worlds, to generate encounters.” 🔗 Read more at the link in the @catchlight.io bio.
