A very valid crashout, featuring me getting very confused with I/O numbers, and Logic's... intricacies when dealing with outboard hardware. I'm typing this having done my first mix with Cubase last week, and rewatching this from my stream with @rekak.music has reinforced why I moved to that DAW! Reasons include not passing audio from the I/O plugin when your source is soloed, and not being able to label hardware I/O when looking at said I/O outside of the main mixer 🤦🏼‍♂️

I still don't know why I have this bypassed by default in my mix template, this trick never fails me! Saw this genius move from @joeysturgistones on @urmacademy for making cymbals sound less harsh, and realised I'd never shown my followers what that sounds like. A match made in Hell. Here's the story that I don't think I've posted about how I discovered my favourite bass amp - the @darkglasselectronics A•Ω 500, lovingly nicknamed Satan. 🤘🔥
I was tracking @dreadpersephoneband’s debut single "Scapegoat" at @ramageproductions, trying to coax the best possible tone out of an Orange Bass Terror. @marcin_ri had left his Alpha Omega unit behind and told us to give it a spin.
One riff through the cab and it was all over. "Screw the Orange. We're using this." I’ve never looked back since.

Everyone knows how much I love my @darkglasselectronics A•Ω 500, but I thought I'd show some of the musical deliberation taken in dialling my tones. In this example from my stream with @rekak.music back in May, a lot of attention is given to the TYPE of distortion I'm using, so the intricacies of the bass part remain intact, whilst also acting as a bulwark of support for the guitars, with their importance in Thall

Ever seen me mess about with a multiband compressor and not really know what I was doing or listening for? I took a snippet from my stream with @rekak.music and decided to annotate what was going on while I was locking in and not speaking. I usually put my multiband compressor before any mastering compressors in my mastering chain, to smoothe things over and make the compressor work less hard

I went out on a limb when I wasn't quite getting the response I wanted from my Elysia Alpha Compressor while mastering @rekak.music's "Northward" on my stream with him back in May. Sidechaining your master to anything often risks sounding way too aggressive, but it turns out this was what the song needed. Here's a snippet showing how this affected the feel of the song

Is the SM57 always the answer? Not today!

During my recent live-stream with @rekak.music, the standard 57 setup just wasn't giving me the weight or the character this Thall mix demanded. It felt a bit too "papery" on the V30, so I decided to ditch the safe option and experiment with some different mics on my custom-built DIY cab.

The new formula for devastation:
🎙️ @seelectronics R1 Ribbon on the Vintage 30 for that thick, creamy low-end.
🎙️ @astonmics Spirit on the G12T-75 for the top-end definition.
Blending these two gave the guitars a massive, three-dimensional mid-range that the 57 just couldn’t touch in this instance. It’s all about finding the right tool for the frequency space you're trying to fill.

WHO WANTS TO TASTE A BASS SANDWICH?

For my recent live-stream with @rekak.music it became obvious fairly early on that I would need to take this approach with my low end. The crazy wall of subs from the bass guitar DI from 20-120Hz immediately told me I needed to create a nice frequency sandwich for the kick drum. This results in an extra 4th dimension to this mix.

Get ready for a brain massage, headphone users.
