Socorro, Texas, is putting borderland food and culture on the national stage. ✨
Gabe and Melissa Padilla, owners of Café Piro, were named 2026 James Beard Award finalists for Best Chef—an incredible recognition of their food, heritage, and community.

Through fresh, made from scratch food, local art, music, cultural traditions, and community gatherings, Gabe and Melissa are creating a space that honors Piro and Mexican American heritage while celebrating the people and stories of the Borderland.

We’re proud to feature them in Frontera Connected as the first episode from Socorro, Texas. 🌵

Our next pottery workshop will be held on Saturday, September 5th from 5-8pm. We will be learning the pinch pot method to make one or two pots. Mezcaleros, espresso cups, or a new mug. You’ll be the artist that day!
Each ticket is $50, this includes all materials, choice of glaze for your new piece & a drinkie from the cafe.

Café Piro was one of the first spots I tried when I moved back home. Being plant-based in El Paso is tough to say the least, but as soon as I walked into the establishment, I could tell the food was going to be great.

The safe space Gabe & Melissa created immediately invited me in and their Tres Hermanas Pozole nurtured not just my stomach, but my soul. 🌱🫶

I am so lucky to be able to collaborate with them and create this experience to share with you all.

This 4-course vegan dinner menu is carefully crafted to integrate with a live performance of new songs from my debut album.

Wa suo é cuties! We’re back from the Windy City with full hearts, souls and minds - still in shock! We are honored to have been chosen to represent our pueblo. Hawié (thank you) for all the love received here and abroad - it was mawé (beautiful) and the experience of a lifetime! The only outcome we’ve wanted is for people to feel safe and cared for in our space - to create a community of cuties through food and art. So, to be acknowledged by @beardfoundation was beyond our wildest expectations! We have another post coming soon with our fits but still need to shout out our incredible artist familia who hand crafted our red carpet outfits @amhatters @christin.m.a @_yucca.studio_ We felt so glamorous to be out of our sweaty aprons and strut our stuff. Thank you to our staff/family who work con todo corazon - Adi, Milah, Hector, Dan “Manitas”Montoya. Thank you cuties @tacotrailofficial @mrbravo365 @analiz_taqueria analiz for showing us around the big city. You made us country mice feel right at home. Lastly, thank you to YOU cuties who have supported us, our dream and made Cafe Piro your home. That is more than we could have ever asked for and your smiles are all the recognition we need. A week later from the @beardfoundation awards and I am still pinching myself! I am honored and humbled for the opportunity to represent my people and pueblo next to my best friend, partner, collaborator…queen (the one who made the amazing corn bolos) Mel🌹 Despite not bringing home a medal, the experience and bonds made are truly the big W of the trip! Thank you to everyone who cheered us on de aqui y alla! Thank you to the beautiful artisan cuties who hand crafted my fit. Thank you to the genuine souls who passed down sage advice and welcomed Mel and I in like family. I am eternally grateful for this moment and can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of us! Wa suoé cuties! Tea!! We will be open this Monday 6/8 from 10-3p in lieu of being closed next weekend. As a friendly reminder, we will be closed 6/11-6/14 as we head to Chicago for the James Beard Awards! We will resume operations on 6/18. We still can’t believe this is happening!
