Overwhelmed that alchemical curator, writer and other-worldly proprietor of the internet’s most inspirational online image archive, @stephenellcock has chosen to include TWO of my photographs in his forthcoming book, England On Fire, which is set to be published by Watkins in May (available to pre-order now).

I’m included in a frankly staggering roll-call of artists that includes Aubrey Beardsley, William Blake, Bill Brandt, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, John Constable, Richard Dadd, William Henry Fox Talbot, Thomas Gainsborough, Barbara Hepworth, Dan Hillier, William Hogarth, Derek Jarman, James Johnston, L.S. Lowry, William Morris, Arthur Rackham, Eric Ravilious, Jamie Reid, William Heath Robinson, Syd Shelton, Austin Osman Spare, JMW Turner, Louis Wain, Nick Waplington, Joseph Wright of Derby and many, many others.

I’ve had a sneak preview, and it’s a thing of surreal, stygian beauty. Its pages juxtapose esoteric marginalia with the bucolic mainstream and explore the elastic, magical boundaries between England’s wildly romantic countryside and its hard, urban streets.Writer and musician Mat Osman has given the works a wider context with a spellbinding narrative that takes us on a tour of the dustiest, ritual-wreathed corners of Albion.

As Mat writes in the introduction to the book, “For centuries the work of women, of working men, of marginalised communities, of anyone outside power’s rigid paradigm, was erased, more likely to be used for firewood or scrap paper than displayed. How many geniuses were born, blossomed and died without leaving a scratch of their art behind for us? Which Coventry Kahlo, which Plymouth Picasso should be hanging in the National Gallery? Ghost works lost in smoke and salt spray. It is, then, all the more important to cherish those pieces from outside the mainstream that Stephen has unearthed here. They’re a secret history of this country, like those handwritten notes you find in library books that say ‘not so!’ or ‘yes, but…’”

A Portrait of Britain.
Honoured to announce that my portraits of Elena Candela and William Henry Hubert Parsons have been selected to appear in the British Journal of Photography’s Portrait of Britain Vol 5. I’ve been a fan of the Hoxton books since they were first published, so to have two in this year’s edition is pretty mind-blowing.

I’m especially proud that both my shots were taken on the hoof, rather than careful set-pieces. I didn't know or hadn’t spoken to either of my wonderful subjects before taking photographs of them.
The picture of William at 2022’s Jack-in-the-Green was taken at the very beginning of the day as the green 'Bogies' assembled at the Stade, Hastings. It’s always a scrum to get pictures at the event, and difficult to isolate individual portraits on such a crowded day. William’s costume was fantastic, I was in exactly the right place, and he had an expression like a god - I got down low.

I don’t enter competitions as a rule, in fact, I haven’t put a photograph in for judging since I started over twenty years ago, so this is particularly sweet. Thank you so much to the best girl Kate Hodges for all the nudging, kicking and arm twisting, without you, I'm nothing. And also huge thanks to Stephen Ellcock who chose two of my photographs to appear in the brilliant England on Fire, which reignited everything for me, especially seeing my photographs outside a computer screen.
Many thanks to the judges, British Journal of Photography and Hoxton Mini Press @hoxtonminipress @bjp1854 @jcdecaux_uk

And a huge thanks to Elena and William, and, actually, thanks to everyone who’s smiled, posed, grimaced or flipped me the bird in the last year. Let’s do it again this year. Jeff

Four fantastic days in Berlin and I’m still not entirely convinced they actually happened.

Huge love and thanks to Birgit for inviting me back to photograph Beat Invasion, and to Conny for giving me a roof, a bed, a bike and somewhere to stagger back to when Berlin had finished with me for the night.

Brilliant bands. Beautiful people. Old friends. New friends. And a whole gang of friends from the UK turning up in Germany and making the whole thing feel strangely like home, only with better bars.

There were so many highlights, but sitting wedged between Bruce Brand's deep snare and Micky’s amp while The Masonics let loose that glorious, primitive raw power was about as close as I need to get to the machinery of rock ’n’ roll. Noise, sweat and electricity going straight through these ol' bones.

The Jack Cades. The Night Times. The Fadeaways. And band after band DJ after DJ reminding you that rock ’n’ roll doesn’t need saving, improving or explaining. It just needs a room, a few lunatics and somebody willing to turn the bloody thing up.

Four days of photographs, trains, bars, noise, laughter, very little sleep and some genuinely beautiful people.

I arrived in Berlin on my own - slightly terrified of the whole adventure. I really don't get to travel very much at all - I left feeling genuinely like Superman - with photographs, stories, new friends and a rather large piece of Berlin lodged permanently in my heart.

Danke Berlin. Danke Birgit. Danke Conny.

Same beautiful mess next time, please. Full set on the @berlinbeatinvasion site. ❤️ by @pitcher_post

“With England as our sinking sand, we dive.”

Penned in 1989 on a healthy diet of outrage and beta-blockers, and recorded in 1990, Dive, the first ever Spitfire release, was an NME Single of the Week, a garage-punk rock ’n’ roll semi-anthem and memorably described by the great Karl Wallinger as “The Adverts meets Julian Cope, only better.”

Dive concerned the much wished-for political demise of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who in eleven short years had done her level best to turn our green and pleasant land into a branch of British Gas.
Privatisation. Pit closures. Deindustrialisation. The flogging-off of our council housing. Deregulation. Greed as a national pastime. Society dismantled and sold back to us in convenient bite-sized portions.
I already had two young daughters in 1990.
They weren’t keen on her either.
The song was, of course, extremely subtle about all of this.
“She will die in my hands - and by my hands, she will die.”
Seemingly innocent pop songs about the downfall of politicians were all the rage back in the 1980s and 90s.
The Beat wanted Thatcher stood down. Costello wanted to tramp the dirt down. The Smiths brought a guillotine. The Stone Roses had beef with the Queen. And comrades S*M*A*S*H simply wanted to, well, quite a bit more...
Obviously one wouldn’t dream of such things in today’s calm, tolerant and politically harmonious Britain.
Unfortunately, Spitfire were operating at the lightning speed of the independent record industry and, just a few months before Dive finally appeared in early 1991, Thatcher had already been disposed of by her own bastard lot.
Clearly, word had got out. She possibly heard the test pressing.
Britain was saved. And everything has been absolutely fine ever since.
Recently uncovered evidence suggests 'the powers that be' even had a number of badges manufactured in a desperate attempt to stop us.
It didn’t work.
Anyway - a few dirty survivors from those halcyon days will be available at the Hope & Ruin and Scala shows in October.
We may even revisit the old song too. I hear the original lead guitarist may be in country 💥💣💯❤️🔥🪓
Dedicated, as ever, to Margaret. Wherever she may be. by @pitcher_post

Praise The Lords.

"Always outsiders, Spitfire, led by brothers Jeff and Nick Pitcher, cut a dash over three EPs in rapid succession on Eve Recordings in 1991, a glorious squall of MC5/Stooges guitar, garage swagger, old fashioned romance and dirty psych wooze. Pure walk-it-like-you-talk-it rock ’n’ roll with heart, fire and zero compromise. Kicking Shoegaze and Baggy into touch and lighting the fuse for the best new wave of new wavers, S*M*A*S*H, These Animal Men and early Britpop to follow. Along with fellow true believers Thee Hypnotics, Spitfire somehow never got their proper due, maybe because rock ’n’ roll was lived, not faked and career opportunities burned rather than chased." RIPPED UP AND READY FOR THE IMMEDIATE NO-FUTURE.

AI’s coming for your job, your girlfriend, your record collection and quite possibly the last miserable scraps of human civilisation.

SO FU*CK IT.

Turn those amps up until something catches fire.

An old slab of Spitfire delinquency dragged kicking, screaming and bleeding into the brave new world for your pleasure.

RIP MY SWEETHEART.

IF THE WORLD’S GONNA END, LET’S AT LEAST HAVE THE DECENCY TO GO OUT TO SOME F%CKING ROCK ’N’ ROLL.

HEAR IT AT THE SCALA IN FOUR WEEKS - MOTHERS!!!!!

FLIP IT.

The back of the new SPITFIRE 45, put together by the great Bruce Brand - Pop Rivet, Milkshake Headcoat, Masonic and far too many other fine things to mention.

Taking pride of place is our gloriously primitive homemade 1990s theremin - a little box of electronic witchcraft that somehow found its way onto Anatomic Love nearly thirty years after it was knocked together.

And if you’re wondering exactly who is Spitfire this time around, there might just be a few clues hidden amongst the small print. But that's not definitive either.

Old faces. New faces. Brothers, sisters, friends and co-conspirators - but every one a beautiful soul.
Plus a few more very kool surprises thrown in too. 🖤💣🔥🤟💯

Available to pre-order now.
