What if the strongest middle class in U.S. history was built on an economic model completely opposite of the one we use today?

That’s the story we’re breaking down in today’s reel — and why it matters right now.

For decades, Milton Friedman’s idea that “the only responsibility of business is to increase profits” reshaped how companies treat workers, communities, and even our housing markets. It fueled the financialization of everything — where speculation, stock buybacks, and squeezing labor became more important than building real value.

But it wasn’t always this way.

The post–WWII era, shaped by Keynesian economics, prioritized higher wages, strong public investment, and shared prosperity. Inequality fell to historic lows, CEO pay was reasonable, and workers’ wages climbed with productivity. That period — the Great Compression — built the most stable middle class America has ever seen.

We’ve tried both models.
One strengthened communities.
The other concentrated wealth and hollowed out the middle.

And at Pitchfork Threads, we know where we stand.

✨ Our Values:
• People > Profits
• Community over speculation
• Fairness, dignity, and shared prosperity
• Using business to help, not extract

✨ How We Live It:
We give 50% of all profits to charities working to end hunger, build community, and fight greed.
Because businesses should serve society — not the other way around.

If you believe it’s time to rethink the economy… we’re with you.
If you want to wear those values proudly, check out our Wealth ≠ Worth shirt — a message our country needs more than ever.

❤️ If this resonated, please LIKE, FOLLOW, SHARE, and visit our site to support a better way forward.
Let’s build a community that stands for something real.

How would “First They Came” by Martin Niemoller sound today? And for those who have stayed silent so far, when will you speak up?

The economy they measure isn’t the one you live in.
Real metrics that actually matter:

Median income — what the middle actually earns
Wage vs. productivity — are workers sharing in the growth?
Housing affordability — can a job pay for a home?
Healthcare cost burden — are people skipping care to survive?
Food insecurity — are people eating?
Economic mobility — can your kids do better than you?

If we don’t measure what matters, we can’t manage and build for it.

What we forget in capitalism. People talk of Adam Smith’s invisible hand and acting in their own self interest, but forget his idea of the impartial spectator, or conscience, that’s supposed to guide our actions with morality. by @pitchforkthreads

The “free market” isn’t free and the invisible hand is created by your actions. If we want to see better business in our communities, we must support the businesses that support those values. by @pitchforkthreads

Where does this all end…. Please keep the protests up. Be peaceful and protect each other and help protect our communities. We can’t turn to violence though. The darkness wins if the light recedes. by @pitchforkthreads
