The recent @icc Annual Conference has resulted in a lot of positive steps forward for the once contracted Afghanistan Women’s Cricketers. A new Taskforce structure, extended high performance funding and a view to include a representative team for 2030 T20 World Cup regional qualifiers. Lots of people to thank to get to this point. Meeting Firooza Amiri @firooza_afghan_09 at TEDSports Indianapolis @tedsportsindy last year was truly inspiring, and it was a privilege to reconnect while supporting the Afghanistan Women’s Refugee Cricket Team @pitchourfuture during their UK tour.Cricket is so much more than a game. This is what it looks like when cricket gives women their freedom back.The Afghan Refugee Women’s XI fled Afghanistan after the Taliban banned women and girls from sport. Many rebuilt their lives and their cricketing dreams in Australia, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Mel Jones, Emma Staples and the wider community who never stopped fighting for them.When they stepped out for their opening fixture on UK soil, they did it in kit designed and built by Lacuna.Every stitch was a conversation. Every fitting was a chance to get it right for players who deserved kit made specifically for them, not adapted from someone else’s template.They won that first match. We’d like to think the kit played its part, but really, this was always about them.Proud isn’t a strong enough word for how we feel to have been trusted with this. by @pitchourfuture
