New research is taking a closer look at who has a seat at the table in nonprofit leadership.

Professor Philip Hackney is involved with the Women’s Nonprofit Leadership Initiative (WNLI), which has released its latest report, Who’s on Board? Gender and Race in Nonprofit Board Rooms. The research examines the representation of women and people of color on the boards of Greater Philadelphia’s major nonprofit institutions, including universities and health systems, and contributes to a broader conversation about nonprofit governance and leadership.

The initiative will continue that conversation on Oct. 26 with Who’s Governing Greater Philadelphia’s Anchor Institutions and Why You Should Care, bringing together experts to discuss the findings and their implications.

New book on the horizon from Pitt Law Dean Jerry Dickinson.

Dean and Professor of Law Jerry Dickinson signed a book contract with the University of Virginia Press to publish The Bottom-Up Constitution: States and the Evolution of American Constitutional Law, expected in the 2027-2028 academic year.

In the book, Dickinson develops the concept of “bottom-up constitutionalism,” examining how federal constitutional ideas, rights, protections, and practices often developed first in state constitutions, state courts, and state legislatures before influencing federal constitutional law.

Spanning the Founding era through some of the most consequential constitutional questions of the modern era, the book offers a new perspective on the role states have played in the continuing development of American constitutional law.

The book will appear in UVA Press’s Constitutionalism and Democracy series.
Congratulations, Dean Dickinson!
