I’ve always been big on constantly learning new things and unlearning things that don’t serve me. And after a certain age, I feel like this becomes even more important. Today was another one of those big learning moments. I’ve performed in front of crowds and made art my whole life, but stepping onto the mats for my first competition hit different (but there is no sticking in jiujitsu!- @ashleyk_valdez )

There’s so much going on right now, “All the trains are running at the same time”-@esglaude and we are under immense strain. The gentle art has made me lighter, and able to think of new ways to inspire my people, while making my mind and body stronger.

I am so incredibly proud of myself and thankful for the community, and family that has supported this new journey for me. I’m glad I can show my kids that you can win when you fight hard, and when you lose you can show grace and respect. My coaches and team at @motioncitybjj are the absolute best. This one’s for you Mari, (who broke their ankle a week before they were supposed to compete alongside me). Can’t wait for the next one.

I don’t normally post pictures of myself on here anymore but I wanted to celebrate one of my coaches. Me and the kids (mostly Mari) have only been coming to motioncity since February, but this place and these people became a mental and emotional safe space for us during the occupation. Trusting people with your body enough to really focus on your breath and being present is easy when community is cultivated. Coach Aiden is a big part of that. I’ve heard that a Black belt is not an ending but a new beginning, and if this his his start, then wherever he ends up will have been beneficial to countless #bjj folks. by @pixelboi84

Rip #jessejackson

I remember the night Obama won. I was at a club back home in St. Louis. Everyone was doing club things when the DJ cut the music. We all groaned for a split second until all the TVs in the venue flipped to the same channel. It was already in session, but newly announced president elect was walking on stage in front of a crowd filled with emotional and inspired folks. The entire club was both silent minus the sounds of sniffles of pride as we watched Oprah, then Jesse Jackson emoting what we all were. It was so powerful for us to see someone like us, achieve what some call the highest position on the world. So I can only imagine what that felt like for the reverend who decades earlier, showed so many that we could have a legitimate shot at this.

It is a high honor to be called home during #bhm to join the ancestors, but man what a significant loss for us here on the mortal plane.
