Mugger crocodile& Chandrasel Math Some places keep calling you back—not just because of their history, but because of the life they continue to nurture.For me, Chandresal Math and the Chandraloi River have always been inseparable. Nearly a thousand years ago, Naga ascetics established this sacred monastery and the Chandreshwar Mahadev Temple on the peaceful banks of the Chandraloi, transforming it into a center of meditation and spiritual learning. Even today, its ancient stones whisper stories of a glorious past.Yet, it is the river that keeps bringing me here.The Chandraloi, a quiet tributary of the Chambal, has become one of the finest natural refuges for the Mugger Crocodile in the Kota region. After the Chambal dams altered the river's natural breeding banks, these ancient reptiles found safety in the calm waters of the Chandraloi. Today, this seemingly modest river shelters an astonishing number of Muggers, especially during the breeding season.Over time, local villagers have also learned to respect this unique ecosystem, making the Chandraloi a remarkable example of peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.As I share these landscape photographs today, I see more than an ancient monastery or a beautiful river. I see a place where history, faith, and nature have flourished together for centuries. World Snake Day 2026 | The Silent Guardians of HadotiIndian Cobra With the arrival of the monsoon, the landscapes of Hadoti—stretching across Kota, Bundi, Baran, and Jhalawar—awaken to one of nature's most misunderstood yet indispensable inhabitants: snakes. Hidden beneath forest canopies, gliding through fertile farmlands, sheltering among ancient rocks, and thriving along the banks of the Chambal River, these remarkable reptiles quietly uphold the delicate balance of life. From the majestic Indian Rock Python, the agile Indian Rat Snake, Checkered Keelback, Buff-striped Keelback, Common Trinket Snake, Bronzeback Tree Snake, and Red Sand Boa to the legendary "Big Four" venomous species—the Indian Cobra, Common Krait, Russell's Viper, and Saw-scaled Viper—each plays a vital ecological role in the rich biodiversity of the Hadoti region. They are nature's most efficient pest controllers, regulating rodent populations that would otherwise devastate crops, spread disease, and threaten food security. At the same time, snakes form an essential link in the food web, sustaining raptors, mongooses, mammals, and countless other predators, making them true architects of a healthy ecosystem. Yet, despite their immense ecological value, they remain victims of fear, myths, and misinformation, with countless individuals killed every year simply because they are misunderstood. The truth is that most snakes avoid human encounters and strike only when left with no alternative. Their presence is not a warning of danger but a powerful indicator of a thriving and resilient environment. Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura)With the arrival of the monsoon, the forests awaken to a beautiful natural symphony. Among the many voices that fill the air are the enchanting calls of migratory birds such as the Common Cuckoo and the Indian Pitta, both of which arrive with the rains. Today, I am delighted to share these photographs of the magnificent Indian Pitta, captured in Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve, where this vibrant bird not only visits during the monsoon but also breeds. The rainy season provides an abundance of insects, ensuring a rich food supply for raising its young. Known for its melodious two-note whistle—often described as "wieet-pyou" or "whee-tiou"—the Indian Pitta's call instantly reveals its presence deep within the forest, adding a magical rhythm to the monsoon landscape. Fondly called Navranga, meaning "the bird of nine colours," its dazzling plumage makes it one of India's most spectacular forest birds. Great Crested GrebeA Dance of Love on Water Some birds impress us with their colors, some with their songs, but the Great Crested Grebe captivates with both its beauty and its extraordinary love story.These photographs were captured at Alniya Dam, Kota, Rajasthan, where I was fortunate enough to observe this elegant waterbird in its stunning breeding plumage. Its distinctive crest and rich facial feathers make it one of the most beautiful birds found on freshwater lakes and wetlands around the world.What makes this species truly special, however, is its remarkable courtship display.As the breeding season arrives, a pair of Great Crested Grebes begins a beautifully synchronized ritual. Facing one another, they mirror each other's movements, shaking their heads in perfect harmony. Then comes their famous "Weed Dance"—both birds dive underwater, collect aquatic plants, and emerge to rise upright, chest-to-chest, appearing to run across the water's surface while presenting these plants to each other.It is not just a dance; it is a symbol of trust, partnership, and a lifelong bond.Witnessing such behavior in Rajasthan is always a delight, and capturing these moments through my lens was a privilege. Hidden Features of NatureThe photo series I am sharing today may leave you wondering about the countless invisible connections that make life possible in the wild.These images tell the story of a parent and a chick living in nature, where survival depends on instincts, patience, and an extraordinary bond between generations. We all know that parents do everything they can to raise their young, providing food, protection, and guidance until they are ready to face the world on their own. But while observing this family through my camera lens, I found myself looking at the story from a different perspective-the chick's point of view.For hours, I remained at a respectful distance, watching quietly. The chick stayed perfectly hidden, protected from predators and danger. This ability to remain concealed was not accidental; it was a lesson taught by its parents from the very beginning of its life.During my observations, the parents returned 8–10 times to feed their young. But what fascinated me most was something I could not easily explain. Almost every single time, about a minute before either parent appeared, the chick would suddenly become active. It would emerge from its hiding place, full of excitement, as if it already knew that food was on the way.There was no fixed schedule. The parents returned only when they had successfully found food. Yet somehow, the chick seemed to sense their arrival before they could even be seen. It reminded me of how humans rely on alarms, clocks, and technology to organize our lives. Here, in the wilderness, there were no such tools—only instinct, connection, and a language beyond our understanding.The final image in this series (which appears first for your convenience) captures that exact moment: the chick emerging from its shelter, expressing pure anticipation and joy, even before either parent had arrived.Moments like these remind me that nature is far more complex and remarkable than we often realize. Despite all our advancements and discoveries, perhaps we have only scratched the surface of understanding its secrets. The Indian Wolf, a subspecies of the Gray Wolf found across Southwest Asia and the Indian subcontinent, was once a familiar sight racing gracefully through our vast grasslands. In a healthy grassland ecosystem, wolves are often regarded as ecological guardians, playing a vital role in maintaining nature's delicate balance. It is deeply concerning that today this magnificent predator is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Many people wonder where these wolves have gone. Have they vanished, died, or been killed? While illegal persecution has certainly contributed to their decline, the harsh truth is that the greatest responsibility lies with us. The grasslands that once sustained them are rapidly disappearing beneath expanding cities, infrastructure, and human development. When we take away their home, where are they supposed to go?If we pause and reflect, we begin to understand the immense significance of grasslands—not only for wildlife but also for humanity itself. These ecosystems quietly perform invaluable services, absorbing carbon, supporting biodiversity, preserving soil health, and helping to balance the environmental pressures created by our growing concrete landscapes and mounting waste. Yet, according to global conservation assessments, grasslands are among the most threatened and neglected ecosystems on Earth. If forests are often called the lungs of our planet, then grasslands can be seen as the vast network of arteries and veins that keep those lungs connected and functioning. Today, many of these lifelines are fading away.The decline of the Indian Wolf is not merely the loss of a species; it is a warning signal from nature itself. Let this reality ignite a sense of responsibility within us. For if the veins of a living body disappear, can the heart continue to function? Likewise, without thriving grasslands, the balance of life that sustains both wildlife and humankind will slowly begin to unravel. On the occasion of World Otters Day 2026, I am sharing this special video of these joyful and mesmerizing creatures. Sadly, otters are now counted among threatened species due to illegal wildlife trade, habitat destruction, and uncontrolled fishing activities caused by humans themselves.Otters are not just playful animals; they are an important part of the river ecosystem and help maintain nature’s balance. Watching them freely playing in the water is truly one of the most beautiful sights in the wild.I feel fortunate that during 2008–09, I witnessed their playful moments many times in the Chambal River. Elders often shared that otters were once commonly seen around Kota, even near Jagmandir, but today such sightings have become rare memories.This video became even more special for me because, for the first time, I witnessed 22 otters together in a single frame — a moment that filled everyone present with pure joy and hope. Though their population around National Chambal Sanctuary has not increased dramatically, their presence here still gives hope for the future.Save Otters, Save Rivers.
