A narrative has been spreading on social media that - Everyone wants a community but no one wants to be a community member.

At first I was moved by that idea and it rings true.

Although so many people do so much work All. The. Time.

I want to be in conversation with people about what this idea is getting at. And also, I want to keep it front and center how much we all show up all and in how many ways.

Can we do more? Are we in need of better community skills? Is the work being done disproportionately by some people? Yes. Yes. Yes.

Let’s keep talking about community. And let’s share what we are doing. Ripple effect. by @pixelpophub

Hi. I’m Pixel, a goal setter and health educator.

Goal Setting is one of the 8 National Health Education Standards and something I’ve been working with since I was a teenager.

I’m currently writing a book called Goal Setting for Liberation because I believe goals, when created with a persons best interests at heart, can help them and their community. But sometimes goal setting can be used punitively or harshly.

Late August always seems to be when I can hear myself a little more clearly.

Last August, sitting on this porch, the message was: it’s time to write the book. A year later, Goal Setting for Liberation is slowly becoming a real thing.

This August, I’m not quite sure what’s coming through yet. Some inklings. Some letting go. I’m listening. 💗

For anyone local - Come join us at Peekskill Pride this Saturday June 27, 2-6pm.

We have a booth selling pride inspired thrifted items, which we are doing just to add to the fun of the day and to offer a low cost way for people to up their pride swag without needing to purchase newly made items (Tho no shame if you have! Pride gear is so beautiful!)

If you've never been to Peekskill Pride, it is a very fun, low key, beautiful, joyous, queer, family-friendly event. There is easy access to food, bathrooms, places to sit and parking.

Summer Sex Ed Movie Club: Healthy Relationships

This 5-week class uses PG-13 movies (all on Netflix) to help teens explore healthy relationships, communication, and real-life decision-making through guided discussion. Conversations are non-graphic, inclusive, and low-pressure.

Two Sections Available this summer:

I just published a new blog post and it's about something I think about a lot — goal setting.

As you may know, I am an Goal Setting enthusiast because it is a strategy that has helped me a lot in my life.

This is me, holding my drum after a Fogo Azul gig - a drumband in NYC that I joined for a couple years after seeing them at Brooklyn Pride and deciding I just HAD to be part of it. I joined as a newbie and it was amazing.

Many people have only had access to a capitalistic version of goals.

I believe goals are inherently human, they can connect us to our truest selves, and even be good for those around us at the same time.

The new post is up and if you're interested in digging into this more, I am running two Goal Setting workshops this topic in May that I'm really excited about:

✦ Goal Setting Power Hour — May 12, 12–1pm ET (a single focused session)
✦ Goal Setting Mini Workshop — May 19 + May 26, 12–1pm ET (two weeks, we go a little deeper)

Both are interactive, low-key, and designed to actually help you figure out what you want to be working toward — not just how to make a better to-do list.

Failed Snow Fort Story

I decided to attempt a beautiful snow fort...like I've seen others make online.

I bought tin trays to make bricks, recruited my child, got started.

I LOVE being in the snow and was going to accomplish a childhood dream

I even told people:
I'M MAKING A FORT!!!

I think you can see where this is going...
It didn't work out for a whole bunch of
reasons. No fort.

I was actually sad. I'm a GOAL SETTER and love a good goal.

Alysa Liu said struggling makes her feel alive. I was feeling that about this fort attempt.

Fort attempt - failed.
That's ok with me actually.
Goal setting fuels me - success or not.

My health educator story.

I've been a health educator since I was a teen. I tried to do other work. I didn't think health education could contain all that I wanted to do. I needed to reckon with my career, even though I was in the midst of doing it. Why? I don't know. It was kinda of painful and also something I was compelled to keep questioning.

Despite what I tried. I kept coming back to health education. I had to accept that this is my calling. What a relief, really.

I can now stand before you as a proud health educator.

My first virtual event of any sort was as a Moveon.org fellowship cohort training in 2018.

I loved the freedom and diversity the virtual space offered me and the couple hundred participants. I loved being a new mom who couldn’t leave the apartment but could still join a meeting with others all over the country. I was hooked.

I teach health education classes and workshops online to teachers, students, admin and more on several types of platforms connected with different schools and orgs.

I love teaching online. I love learning online. Who would have guessed!?
