Good news - My small strawberry 🍓 plants are flowering and I’ve also got some baby strawberries.

Not so good news - But it also looks like I’ve got a caterpillar. 🐛 I mostly get the bright fluorescent green ones. They must be somewhere, by the looks of some of the part eaten leaves. 🍃.

I think it’s almost time for me to go and buy some tomato 🍅 plants from @ceresnurserybrunswick

This traffic barrier is so “helpful” when your on a bike 🚲 . This is on Saxon Street in Brunswick, outside Balam Balam Place.

Could this be fixed @merri_bekcitycouncil please, so you can bike down this road?

Maybe add some space on the right of the road barrier, so a bike can get around it?

Or maybe, just remove the barrier and add some poles in the middle of the road, that are removable (as needed)?

I really hate these pedestrian traffic lights🚦 outside the Fitzroy swimming pool. 🏊 They often only let you go halfway a lot of the time and then you have to wait (in the middle medium strip) for a whole set of lights to change again.

Often people give up waiting and just cross when they can’t see traffic, which has to be a safety issue, but considering the wait time it is understandable.

I also hate the pedestrian lights on Canning Street (the main bike 🚲 path, which is the borderline of @cityofyarra and @cityofmelbourne. They are very slow to change.

This is going to become an even bigger issue when North-East Link opens and significantly more traffic goes along the Eastern freeway to the city (est. to be 100,000 more cars 🚗 a day).

I wonder if the council’s have been talking to the state Vic government about this? There are consequences for doing major new freeways.

@infrastructurevictoria has on their Victoria’s infrastructure strategy 2025- 2055 (on their website and PDF file) a plan to build a version of North West link to Royal Park (listed under item 45) near @zoosvictoria Melbourne Zoo linking to CityLink.

It should be noted that this Infrastructure Vic plan also has a lot of good things that we definitely should do, like tram extensions to Fisherman’s bend and Upfield line duplication and extension to Craigieburn line. The 2025 train and tram costing and modelling was done by @aecom see https://assets.infrastructurevictoria.com.au/assets/strategic-transport-modelling-of-tram-and-train-projects.pdf

Related side issue for @adampulford and @angelica_panopoulosgreens @merribek_greens @merri_bekcitycouncil
Considering the large amount of work that it’s been already done on this costings by AECOM on things like the Upfield line, etc, I really wonder why the Victorian government is going to spend $80 million doing yet “another plan for duplication”. I still don’t understand why they are not just putting in a set of points that was costed already by the Parliamentary budget Office (PBO) at Gowrie station? Faster cheaper option than duplication?

A State Memorial Service to honour the life of Dr Tim Read will be held at 3:30pm on Wednesday, 28 October at Melbourne Town Hall.

Tim was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2018 and became one of its most respected parliamentarians over his eight years of service to the people of Brunswick and the state.

Before entering Parliament, Tim was a doctor and medical researcher. He began his career as a general practitioner in community health before specialising in sexual health in the public system.

As a respected researcher, Tim contributed to over 60 peer-reviewed medical publications covering topics such as the public health approaches to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and antibiotic-resistance. Tim completed a PhD on HIV epidemiology and vaccine prevention of STIs.

Tim created history in 2018 becoming the first Greens member for Brunswick.

Over the following eight years, he championed action on climate change, contributed significantly to public health, improved sustainable transport, and campaigned for democratic safeguards, integrity reform and stronger protections for renters.

Tim was the only medical doctor in the Victorian Parliament during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tim’s commitment to improving public health outcomes contributed to significant legislative and policy reforms, including pill testing, tobacco licensing, the abolition of public drunkenness offences, and the development of a statewide plan to eliminate congenital syphilis and HIV transmission.

Among his many achievements, Tim played a leading role in allowing gay men to donate blood and legislating a statutory ban on solitary confinement in Victorian prisons.

Tim’s ability to work across the aisle resulted in strong legislative reforms and changing the course of integrity reform in the state.....

I saw this on a bike ride this morning after hanging out with Billy the dog 🐕 and @mercedes.lentz.7

It’s been a while since the City of Fizroy.
It’s kind of fun to still see signs still around.

ABC News story:
'Emergency extractions' of wild birds considered as H5 bird flu spreads in Victoria.

In short:
The Victorian government is considering "emergency extractions" of threatened bird species from the wild, as H5 avian influenza spreads.

The breeding season has commenced in Victorian wetlands this spring, increasing the risk of bird flu circulating among the congregating fauna.

What's next?
The government has identified nearly 100 bird species at risk of H5N1, including black swans and brolgas.

Zoos Victoria and other wildlife facilities already have populations of threatened species in captivity to ensure their protection.

"That's the orange-bellied parrot, plains wanderer, regent honeyeater, and the helmeted honeyeater, one of the state's formal emblems," - Chief biodiversity officer at the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Director Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research. (DEECA), James Todd.

"Helmeted Honeyeaters fly free!" photos and video are by me, from 10 when I worked at @zoosvictoria with @rickstagramma. This was part of the Helmeted Honeyeaters breading program (the birds being released into the wild at the end of Sep, 10 years ago) with a lot of help from @friendsofthehelmetedhoneyeater .

They are beautifal birds. I hopfully the bird H5 bird flu don't impact them much.

So they could’ve actually tried to fix some of the major issues, (as the Tech leaders and Chinese president were there in tue same room), but Trump is more interested in talking about non AI things, like f*ing curtains and his ego focused ballroom. FFS

“The American president and the Chinese president, dining by candlelight with Elon Musk, Jensen Huang and Tim Cook, all of them sitting in the State Dining room of the White House at this moment that many in Silicon Valley warn could be the last before mankind stumbles into the A.I. apocalypse.” - @nytimes

“… I’d like to invite everyone in the room to visit through that beautiful curtain in the back — The door, it’s all lit up, and looks beautiful. It’s one year away from completion, the new ballroom that you’ve heard about.”
- President Trump as quoted by the NYT.

Article “Dining With A.I. Moguls, Billionaires and Xi Jinping, Trump Went Off Script”

“Altman. Musk. Huang. Bezos. They all came to the White House Thursday night, though you might not have seen it on TV.”

So I saw all these tomato 🍅 plants outside Brunswick “fun size” (small/little) Bunnings on Sydney Road. Very tempted to buy some. Interesting varieties this year with cool colours (see photos).

i’m probably going to go to @ceresnurserybrunswick for my tomato plants 🌱 , as I like to support not-for-profits, community groups and small business. @ceresbrunswick does good work too.
