For the last 8-9 months, I’ve been struggling with severe acne.

And before anyone says, “It’s just acne,” let me tell you something, when you wake up every day and the first thing you see is your skin getting worse, it affects much more than your face. It affects your confidence, your mood, your willingness to be photographed, and even your desire to step outside.

What hurt me wasn’t the acne itself. It was people’s reactions to it.
Relatives would visit my home, ask about everything except how I was doing, and then suddenly ask, “What happened to your face?”
People who had never asked how my life was going, how work was going, or how I was feeling ,somehow felt entitled to discuss my skin.

And the saddest part is the comments didn’t come from random people on the street. They came from relatives, guests,people who knew me. People I cared about.

What many don’t realize is that when you point out someone’s acne, weight, scars, hair loss, or any visible struggle, there’s a very high chance they already know about it. They saw it before you did. They have probably cried over it, worried about it, and thought about it far more than you can imagine. You’re reminding them of something they’ve already been fighting every single day.

Today, my skin is healing. And while I learned how to take care of my skin, I also learned something else.

Just because you notice something about someone’s appearance doesn’t mean it needs to be said out loud.

There are so many better questions to ask.
How are you?
How have you been?
How is work?
How is life?

And honestly, if the only thing you can notice about someone when you meet, is what’s wrong with their face, maybe the problem was never their face to begin with.
