Truly special occasion at the @bigdeeptheband launch show at @bearsvilletheater this past weekend 🥁🔥🙌

Been shedding @j0rby and @lukeschwartzmusic music all Summer long and to finally get out of the shack and onto the stage was an amazing experience. “You don’t suck.”

Prepping for Fall tour with @bigdeeptheband and @weirdphishes so I was digging through some old hardware and gear. Haven’t busted out my old 1960’s Ludwig in a couple years and lo and behold, a hidden message I left for myself and completely forgot about.

I know many of my fellow musicians can relate to this feeling of never being “good enough” or just being debilitatingly hard on yourself. But giving yourself little positive reminders and some grace can sometimes do a world of good.

Layering and mapping MIDI synths on my @rolandglobal e-kit has been super fun and inspiring. Here’s some unsolicited alien noodles from today’s Immaculate Random session. Adding in some synths to my arsenal from @sequential_llc and @ashunsoundmachines has also been very satisfying.

I’ve been exploring this sonic territory more and more these days, layering acoustic (or electronic) drum sounds with synths and effects. Would love some more seasoned producers and sound design heads to collaborate and create with 👽🍜🥁🦾🔥

🔥FULLY IMPROVISED HOUSE MUSIC OPENER🔥

Often times with @weirdphishes we won’t have a planned song to start our shows. We’ll jam along with what music the venue plays in the house speakers and let that inform what we play and what we can lead into. It’s a fun creative challenge (albeit a bit freaky at times.)

For our @phish after party at @sonyhall we did just that and were lucky enough to draw from the great Freddie Hubbard’s Red Clay. I’ve added some real-time text to explain my thought process and musical approach to help create what became a 25 minute exploration from Red Clay -> Packt Like Sardines -> Thriller -> Subterranean Homesick Alien to start our show. 5’s 4’s 3’s

Super fun challenge inspired by some of @stevelymanmusic exercises for our @cdsdrumming Phase 2 unit.

It’s not about complexity or polyrhythms for giggles (okay it is a LITTLE bit about that.) But more about maintaining even tone and consistent strokes while shifting your focus of time note to note (how do the upbeats on my Left Foot align the 5’s in my Left Hand? How does the ride cymbal align with the 3’s in my Right Foot? Etc.)

To me, it’s about stretching your limb-independence and rhythmic bandwidth while still prioritizing fundamentals of time, tone, technique or even posture.

Far from flawless execution here but still a great use of time in the practice space nonetheless! 🥁💪🙏❤️🎵
