Ph.D. astrophysicist turned semi-pro photographer. Mostly nature, but sometimes I get to take pictures of race cars.

A Year At The Races 🏁

From the green flag at Daytona through overtime at Phoenix, this was probably my best year yet on the motorsports front.

I’ve shot a lot of cool moments since I got into covering racing, but I don’t think any of them beat the vibes from this year’s Brickyard weekend. Gonna be chasing that high for the foreseeable future.

A Year On The Trail 🥾

We live on such a beautiful world. It’s incredible what you can see if you just go out there and take off your lens cap. Here’s to another year of astrophotography, landscapes, and little details. 🥂

Mountains and Moose 🫎

Call me Teddy Roosevelt the way I found(ed) a bull moose (party).

I’ve never been particularly excited about the old barn, but I’m a big fan of the other Grand Teton clichés. Shout out to the park’s most cooperative bull for working with me on our little photo shoot.

Shoulder Season Sights 🦬

I sure do love Yellowstone. I won’t claim to know how it stacks up against global icons like the Serengeti or Torres del Paine, but I don’t think anywhere else in the U.S. can compare when it comes to wildlife spotting.

Cheers to a few days very well spent.

We’re fall-ing for the parks all over again. 🍁

Swipe for huckleberry reds, golden meadows, and a grouse with excellent posing skills. →

We hope you’re gearing up for your own fall adventure in the parks this weekend! As always, give wildlife plenty of room.

Gone Winnin’ 🎣

With a week to simmer on the one that got away at Kansas, Chase Briscoe put on quite the bass-kicking in Vegas. I imagine it had to feel good to be on the other side of an aero blocking clinic this time around.

Was also pretty cool to see all the tributes to Kyle Busch this weekend. He’s a legend everywhere, of course, but there’s no place like home.

In Brightest Day 🌟

“Not bad, trainee” — Kyle “Hal Jordan” Larson

Talk about an instant classic. Say what you will about the kid, Corey Day sure isn’t afraid to send it when the race is on the line.

Red (Tahoma’s Version) 🍁

“I... am an Autumn.” — @mountrainiernps, probably

Took advantage of an East coast work day earlier this week to make it out to see Tahoma in her fall glory. If you can swing it, the place is absolutely splendid on weekday afternoons without the crazy crowds that you usually have to contend with.

Fall’s Choir 🎼

While the rest of the day was a bit of a letdown (thanks OU football 🫠), at least my morning walk with the elk was fun. Just a delightful chorus of bugling elk blended with birdsong, interspersed with the occasional red-tailed hawk screech. Now if only John Mateer could hold onto the football…

All She Wrote ⛈️

Scenes from last night’s season finale for the Seattle Storm.

Admittedly, I’m still working on figuring out the best way to tackle shooting from the overflow section — and indoor lighting generally — but I think I put together a decent set here. Hindsight being what it is, the 600mm bazooka was probably a bit overkill. 😅

Them’s the Brakes ♨️

Death, taxes, and crazy mechanical failures in St. Louis. Glad that pit wall took the brunt of Blaney’s brake rotors when they came flying my way. That would not have been a very fun trip to the infield care center. 😅

Work On Me 🎶

All that for a Larson win? Nah, buddy. All that for a Dasha concert.
