Inspired by the cultural clash that took place after moving into the same Manhattan apartment building as Shaw’s parents shortly before their son’s birth, filmmakers Artemis Shaw and Prashanth Kamalakanthan turn the lens on themselves as new parents in @removal.of.the.eye.

Kallia and Ram are at their wits’ end with their sleepless baby when they realize Kallia’s Greek mother is on a secret mission to exorcise the family from the evil eye.

Trapped between the pressures of new age parenting, old world superstitions, and meddling in-laws, they fight to hold onto their dreams.

Set in a high-rise apartment, Ph.D student Kallia and fledgling-rapper Ram (Shaw and Kamalakanthan) endure sleepless nights with their newborn baby, while Kallia’s mother (who lives one floor below) looks to end their problems with a Greek rite of passage: to exorcise their family from the evil eye. With a Cassavetes-like inclination to turn the camera on themselves and their loved ones—including their actual baby and parents—Shaw and Kamalakanthan’s fearless, intimate comedy establishes them among the freshest and most inventive young American filmmakers working today.
