Three part reflection

1. A huge influence and spark of what an artist to me was or could be, came out of the creative melting pot of New York. As a teenager growing up on an island at the bottom of the South Pacific, I used to love gleaning through books of artist studios in 80’s NYC; Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama etc etc… many images of which were taken by a legendary photographer, Roland Hagenberg. It felt so magic, inspiring and far away.

2. Throwback 8 years ago to NYC - ‘Alt/Shift’, 2018, a DIY show I did in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I used a street-level space near the corner of Orchard and Broome Street for an exhibition and also hung paintings and documented them in situ across the city, a kind of departure of the confines of the gallery situation to a public immersive experience. It was exciting and strangely nostalgic to an Era I hadn’t actually lived in, but could feel the creative energy in the streets, and walked past ex-studios and street signs of where artists lived and created… (Somehow also did this with a two and four year old)

3. 2024, I was out with the family for my birthday and by chance I met Roland in Tokyo at an exhibition of his work at @so1 in Shibuya. We chatted, and as I discovered that he too, now lived in Japan, we exchanged contacts. Later in 2025, he accepted an invitation to visit my studio and took some photographs. I was mindblown.

A few images from last month’s show in New Zealand. Super grateful to exhibit paintings in my hometown after so long. Thank you to my family, friends and sponsors who helped make it happen and a very special thank you to my new collectors - It is a huge compliment and validation to have people believe in what I do and choose to invest in my work. I couldn’t do this without you.

The paintings from this series were created in my Tokyo studio and developed through experimenting with speed in the application of paint. I used various methods including a custom built machine that rotated the canvases at different velocities as I applied separate layers and paint surfaces. The paintings might appear in high energy movements, however the intended outcome wasn’t to present anything frantic, but to actually take pause, be drawn into the details and search for a slower looking experience… There is something in the stillness I am searching for.

“Painting in its purest form in an exploration of seeing. Rive approaches making art in a way that challenges the traditional order and process of what a painting is, and how it is made. His most recent series of paintings were created in his Tokyo studio and developed through experimenting with speed in the application of paint. Using a custom built machine, as well as his hand, 727mm square canvases were rotated at various velocities as layers and surfaces of paint were applied. The paintings might first appear as high energy movements, but through the process he was most drawn to the clarity and stillness in them.
His practice utilizes a diverse range of materials and techniques, traditional and industrial paints, photography, tools and processes to create a form of painting that explores the condition of the moment and challenges the boundaries of scale, material and idea - of how a painting is created, seen and experienced.”

Studio 1/6/26

Driving through the city last night - Can’t get this song out of my head… a beautiful track off Flea’s new Jazz inspired album, Honora.
Very rarely do I get a full day to paint, in between design work, teaching at my art school, being a Dad to two awesome boys, husband, butler and fireman, life etc…
It’s been on rotation in the studio all morning, I just let it keep playing… it all flies by, it’s nice to slow it down and remember how much I love to do this.

My paintings might first appear fast, like high energy movements, but there are layers to the process and that is where the soul of the work is… I actually see them as very still. Some new paintings will be on show at the Tiny Corner Gallery in Ebisu later this month.
