Subliminal 003
Full takeover (Modular + Lido)

To host an event is more than simply bringing people together. It’s about connecting creatives, weaving worlds and curating an experience. One which is collectively felt and held long after the moment, in memory and movement.

Subliminal is a threshold to pass, entering a deeper state of focus and groove. Some places you can only enter by leaving something behind.

For this edition we’ve got an exciting showcase, anonymous DJs going back to back as Hidden Handz.

Repost this post and comment who you think it’ll be. Correct guesses go into the draw to win a limited edition zine celebrating rave posters.

OPEN CALL. 📞

Plaɘground is calling for visual artists working across Cape Town’s underground: painting, illustration, graffiti, photography, mixed media, all welcome.

We’re looking for work that hasn’t been made for approval. Made because it had to exist, not because it’ll perform.

Selected artists will take part in Beneath the Surface, a group exhibition at District Studios on November 5th.

Submissions close Sunday, October 10th.

How to apply: link in bio for the questionnaire, submit examples of your selected work. by @plae_create

✧ *Yasuke · Through the Repertoire* ✧

Yasuke’s story begins in the fifteenth century, where myth and memory intersect.

A young African man arrives in Japan and enters the service of Oda Nobunaga.

Through loyalty, discipline and an uncommon presence,
he becomes recognised as the first Black samurai (retainer) a figure carried through movement, craft
Yet Yasuke’s story is also a mirror.

A call toward shadow interrogation, a summons
to meet the parts of ourselves we avoid or conceal.

His journey resonates with anyone who has felt displaced, unseen or unrecognised, yet still chooses presence
This is where Plaɘ and Baba Yaya converge.

Two years of shaping a shared language across dance, theatre, scenography, rhythm and memory-smithing.

Together we create a world where story is not observed but lived.

Through the Repertoire became a threshold.

A gathering to explore how narrative imprints itself through the body.

A space to witness process instead of product, to notice what emerges through repetition, discipline, becoming.

Resonance joined this constellation of makers. Artisans of scent, garment and adornment who shape the subtle architecture of atmosphere.

Smoke, dyed textiles, jewellery, layered garments, the sensorial fabric that holds the room together.

A triad of movement, material and memory beside Plaɘ and Baba Yaya.

Through the Repertoire was never only an event. It was an ecosystem. A conversation between bodies. A bridge between archive and repertoire, where history becomes a lived practice again.

A place where Yasuke’s story becomes everyone’s story, inviting us to face the shadow, honour the body and step into presence.

Thank you to everyone who entered this world with us. This is only a chapter. The work continues ✺ taken in De Waterkant by @plae_create

Some highlights from the BFFxSL launch on 04 Sep @shelflifestore

Massive love to @tmssoundsystems for delivering a next-level experience on the night. Not only have they redefined what it means to listen, but they’ve also cemented South Africa’s sound system culture on the global map. Don’t sleep on their journey ➟ it’s only getting louder!

To the incredible artists who blessed the space with their sounds: thank you for channelling the spirit of the BORN FROM FILTH incantation. Your energy, presence, and artistry brought the vision to life in ways words can’t touch.

And lastly, deep gratitude to @shelflifestore for welcoming us into your unreal space. The vibes, the warmth, the community. You made us feel at home. We’re forever grateful. 🫶
