Thanks everyone for showing up at the Tea Talk Tuesdays on June 3, and let me share "Citrus at Sea" and stories of art and cultural connections through seaweed. Thanks to Judiann, Sarah, and Brian @foodlabsh Stony Brook Southampton (I look forward to future collaborations), @kelly.dennis.esq for trying sprinkles of ulva (파래) from the South Shore on the pie--and always @jeremynative for fun photos. Citrus at Sea 🍋🌊

Kelp Graham Cracker Crust

1½ cups graham cracker crumbs (about 12 sheets)
⅓ cup sugar
6 Tbsp melted butter
¼ cup finely ground Korean dasima (kombu)

Mix ingredients, press into a pie dish, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes. Let cool.

Lemon Filling

½ cup fresh lemon juice
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Pinch of salt

Whisk until smooth and pour into the cooled crust. Chill until set (about 2–3 hours).

Top with whipped cream before serving. Lemon jest and dasima powder (or any seaweed powder for extra topping)

A pie inspired by seaweed cultures across Korea, Hawaiʻi, Brittany, and Long Island—where the ocean meets citrus.

#consciouspoint #pbs Conscience Point (2019) follows the grassroots activism of the Shinnecock Indian Nation as they resist encroaching development on their ancestral lands in the Hamptons. Through interviews, archival footage, and on-the-ground storytelling, the film challenges colonial legacies of property, race, and erasure. After the screening, director Treva Wurmfeld (on Zoom) Shane Weeks (on Zoom) and Kelly Dennis (in-person), citizens of the Shinnecock Nation who appear in the film, joined the SBU folks at the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook. Together, we discussed Indigenous self-representation, ecological stewardship, unmarked burial sites, and the layered politics of (in)visibility in settler spaces. Questions from students of "ARH 391 Topics in Global Art" include what kind of inter-tribal coalitions are practiced today; how non-native people living on Long Island can move beyond the position of complicity; what it means to be a Shinnecock citizen today. #sbunews https://news.stonybrook.edu/university/shinnecock-voices-take-center-stage-in-conscience-point-screening/ taken in Humanities Institute at Stony Brook by @planetartlife

Through relations, we tread on this earth--today with the same amount of water it has always had. Fugitivity of water connects us all. @themuseumofmodernart With theorists-practitioners Joseph M. Pierce (Cherokee Nation citizen), Leanne Betasamosake Simpson (Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg), and Candice Hopkins (Carcross/Tagish First Nation)--the room was filled with laughter and care. Thank you for the inspiring conversation! Indeed, care is key to repair. #josephmpierce #leannebetasamosakesimpson #candicehopkins @pepepierce Candice Hopkins' edited volume, “Native Visual Sovereignty,” is forthcoming in December 2025. Thanks everyone to join the screening of #seaweedstories and a special Q&A with phycologist Charlie Yarish! Thanks also to film's director Jake Sumner and producer Emy Kane @lonelywhale for sending in welcoming videos for the audience at Stony Brook. Charlie is a leading marine biologist specializing in marine algae. His connection with the Shinnecock Bay began in the late 1980s (with a 1988 paper on the Southern limit in the Western Atlantic Ocean's Laminaria population), and picked up again with his work at GreenWave @greenwaveorg, a non-for-profit organization that supports community-based aquaculture and that assisted @shinnecockkelpfarmers in setting up the hatchery in Hamptons Bay. Recognizing early on the importance of public outreach and education, Charlie served as a consulting scientist on many cultural projects, including the 60 minutes episode on seaweed aquaculture (@60minutes) and the art exhibition "A Singularly Marine & Fabulous Produce: The Cultures of Seaweed" @whalingmuseum Watch Seaweed Stories on Leonardo DiCaprio's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpHzvE_HLGY by @planetartlife

Planet Art Life curator Sohl Lee joined the LMCC/Stony Brook artist open studio to showcase seaweed samples from Korea, seaweed-brownies, cyanotypes she made in Victoria Island with @Bclarkson at the International Seaweed Symposium, pastel and oil pastel drawings, a protest picket sign made at Jeffrey Gibson workshop @thechapterhousela (on LA NDNs Friends & Neighbors day). Thanks to everyone who showed up, and showed your love for seaweed, and helped brainstorm the name for this new seaweed-gastronomic-art! taken in Lmcc's Art Center At Governor's Island Building 110 by @planetartlife

What would kelp taste like when mixed into brownie batter? This small bite—of sea/weed brownie or kelprownies??—is wholesome and explosive! Help me come up with an appropriate, loving name for this seaweed-art! Gluten free version made with rice flour has a gochujang kick! @seaweed_city in #governorsisland #nycclimateweek Sugar kelp is grown and harvested in Yankee Pier on Governors Island, and then dried. Smoosh them to make it into soil amendment for gardens; ferment anaerobically for two months to make kelp juice--and return nitrogen to our soil. After two months, sugar kelp is still very much intact! Looking forward to learning more about the amazing work at Seaweed City! taken in Yankee Pier At Governors Island by @planetartlife
