Refreshing our memory: what is the Planetary Health Check (PHC)? 🤔

Just like a blood test reveals what’s happening inside the human body, the PHC reveals the state of Earth’s health. It is our yearly snapshot of planetary stability, showing where humanity stands in relation to the Planetary Boundaries.

One of the missions of Planetary Guardians is to elevate the science behind Planetary Boundaries —but what exactly are they? 🌍

Think of Earth as a living body: it has limits. The Planetary Boundaries framework outlines 9 critical Earth system processes that keep our planet stable and livable. Crossing them means pushing Earth beyond a safe zone.

From climate change to chemical pollution, we’ve already breached 6. But understanding the risks is the first step toward restoring balance.

Join Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Johan Rockström and Katrín Jakobsdóttir for an important conversation on the security dimensions of a weakened or collapsed Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

The plenary session highlights the growing cooperation between policymakers and scientists to better understand and respond to emerging climate security risks.

It’s strange but I think as the political pendulum swings into an era of conservatism, we have gotten really passive with the language we use to talk about climate change. The amount of times I heard “overshoot” or “heat index” at NYCW was significantly more than the fact that the next super el-nino will kill half a million people next year.
I think we’ve also started normalizing climactic disasters. As if someone’s life was just a blip in time, and not an entire ending, not entire loss of memory, of culture of home.
It was my honor to talk about the real consequences at the 4th annual planetary boundary launch with Prossor Johan Rockstrom, President Santos and Mary Robinson, and Nobel prize winning scientist Professor Carlos Nobre. It was also my heartbreak to talk about these stories in a room so far removed from the places I mentioned. But I am greatful for this task.
Through the @futuregenerationstribunal my team and I will continue demarcating these stories. We will continue to insist that they are evidence of loss. We will make sure lives in their fullest are honored and so are the losses. by @planetarygdns

THE EARTH GOT A PLANETARY HEALTH CHECK. 🌎🩺

Last week in NYC, for the first time ever, doors opened as to the Planetary Health Club, a two-day pop-up designed to make our planet’s health something you could see, feel, and experience.

Because an unhealthy planet doesn’t just affect “the environment.”

It affects our air, water, food, bodies, and future.

For two days, we brought that connection to life.

The Club may have ended, but the conversation and the work are just getting started.

A few moments from the launch of the Planetary Health Check 2026 in New York 🗽

At @thenewschool scientists, Planetary Guardians, Indigenous leaders and partners came together around our shared responsibility to protect the planet.

Seven of nine Planetary Boundaries are transgressed, and all seven continue to worsen. The window to change course remains open, but it is narrowing.

We also honoured @dr.sylviaearle with the Planetary Treasure Award and closed with music from @jacksonbrowne, celebrating the power of science, stories and connection to inspire action.

Thank you to everyone helping bring this science to the world. Let’s make this the decade we bend the curves.

It’s the hottest year on record. Seven of the nine planetary boundaries have been breached. It’s code red for the planet. That’s what we’re hearing at New York Climate Week. But the Planetary Guardians (@planetarygdns) were clear today: we still have a window to turn this around.

At a briefing in New York FEMINIST had the opportunity to speak with some of the greatest minds on climate action, anxiety and responsibility and they’re not without hope, and after hearing what they have to say, neither are we.
