Artist Brief: Nurdle Pollution
Quay Arts- Isle of Wight

Artists are invited to create artwork exploring one of the ocean’s lesser-known but widespread pollutants: nurdles. Your artwork should use nurdles (plastic pellets) and tell something of the story about nurdle pollution and the impact they have on our marine environment, as well as human health.

During 2026, Planet Aware IW will gather artworks and curate an exhibition with the kind support of Quay Arts and creatives @westsouthwesterly @seafeverarts and @hgmakings in the run up and start of the Great Global Nurdle Hunt. Ryde
Great to see so many out enjoying the Wight Wave Beach Fest today and being active.

We were there to promote our cigarette butt litter info and pocket ashtrays to raise awareness of the impact of cigarette butts, the most littered item globally!!

We found a whopping 207 CIGARETTE BUTTS on our survey of the paths and near side beach at Appley.

We also collected a bin bag full of rubbish despite seeing a lot of people doing the right thing and using the bins available. Most was single use containers and sweet/snack wrappers.
Thank you to @rydetowncouncil for supporting our cigarette butt litter posters and stand today.

It would great to see more prominent signage for the Refill taps so that people don't buy water in single use bottles plus a deposit return scheme for those selling beer or soft drink in pint and half pint cups (especially if on council land).

Millions of tiny plastic pellets, known as nurdles, are lost into the environment every year. They’re easy to miss, but they can have a huge impact on our coastlines and marine life.

I joined @planetawareiow for a nurdle hunt at Bembridge Harbour, helping collect these tiny pieces of plastic before they could wash back into the sea.

The nurdles we collected won’t just be removed from the shoreline—they’re becoming part of an artwork for an upcoming exhibition, transforming pollution into a conversation about our relationship with plastic.

Every piece tells a story. Every handful makes a difference.

ISLE OF WIGHT
We enjoyed being part of the IOW Biosphere celebrations .. it's great our precious island has this status and glad our work on plastic pollution with our community, can contribute towards this.
We continue to raise awareness of nurdle pollution @fidra_ngo and other forms of plastic that wash up on our shores. Our beach cleans on less accessible beaches continue but will ramp up towards autumn and winter or as the weather changes.

We need more volunteers especially those with experience in science based subjects, working with youth groups and charities.

Bembridge harbour
Thank you everyone who came along today for our Biosphere nurdle hunt. As usual there are sadly so many nurdles that have been funnelled in here along with other bits of debris.
Lovely to see some IOW creatives who are planning to use their skills to help us in September as part of The Great Nurdle Exhibition at Quay Arts and to have the Biosphere team come along.
We will send our findings off to @fidra_ngo

Good to bump into the beach cleaning group from @bembridgeparishcouncil too and hand over some of the rubbish we'd collected to add to their hoard.

IOW Thank you to Scout leaders and to Brighstone sea scouts for helping clean the beach at Brook yesterday.
We ended up with about four bin bags of rubbish and more than 50 plastic pellets - nurdles.
Usually Brook has a much higher number of nurdles but depending on weather and wind directions this can vary..
Well done and hope you will go on to do more to care for your ocean!

IOW plastic pellets called nurdles are the feedstock of all our plastic goods. They are lost to the environment through container spills and mishandling during their supply chain. On the IOW nurdles have been found on much of the coast.
On sand they are easy to find otherwise they hide in shingle and crevices on rocky shores , under seaweed or even blown onto walkways in high winds.

Depending on weather conditions and tides they come and go.

What we do know is that there are trillions lost each year which pollute our oceans and harm wildlife when mistaken for food. The also act as sponges taking in heavy metals and pesticides etc so adding toxicity to the risk they already pose.

Thank you to everyone who took time to enter the World Ocean Day window display competition.

Winners this year are:
FARM HOUSE FAYRE for the well researched and fun window they put together and THE DEPARTMENT, RYDE @department_ryde for the visually exciting widow.
We appreciate it was quite short notice but with 19 shops joining in this year we hope for even more involvement in 2027..
