"SYNCRETIC BIO-SHELTERS – Collection to survive extreme environments" kicks off on October 5th. We are delighted to welcome Jovana Gunjova, Paula Meier — selected by Materahub — to co-create the tech-enabled wearables of the future designed to tackle climate change! Antonia Ablass will join them as a cooperating artist.

Jovana Gunjova is a fashion designer from North Macedonia. Her practice explores the relationship between the body, materials, and the senses, with a particular focus on sustainable and biodegradable materials. She works closely with the unexpected behaviours of materials, exploring how clothing can extend beyond its traditional role as a garment to become a second skin, a form of protection, and a sensory connection between the body and its environment.

Paula Meier is a nomad maker originally from Catalonia (Spain) and a digital fabrication artist working between craft and technology. She works as a lab manager and project manager in makerspaces and cultural spaces around Europe, running open workshops in 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, digital and hand embroidery, weaving, and screen printing, alongside ongoing experiments with biomaterials and natural fibres.

Antonia Ablass is a German textile designer who, early in her textile design studies, began exploring the potential of textiles to reintroduce nature into clothing and the built environment. Since then, she deepened her understanding of plant physiology, wildlife, and human–nature relationships. She will join the artists’ team thanks to the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs exchange program, hosted at "Crea che Ricrea" by Angela (Lina) Ramundo, a master artisan from Matera who will contribute to the residency with other local artists and community members.

"SYNCRETIC BIO-SHELTERS – Collection for surviving extreme environments" is an artist residency within the "Terre Immerse - Comunità Creative Euromediterranee” program, promoted by Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019 for Matera 2026 Capitale Mediterranea della Cultura e del Dialogo, in collaboration with the Comune Matera. The program is funded by Ministero del Turismo and Regione Basilicata.

woman of peas

Where does the human body end, and where does nature begin?
Human and nature. Why do we separate the two?
Isn’t the human body an ecosystem in itself? Our bodies are inhabited by complex communities of microorganisms, from the bacteria living on our skin to those inhabiting our gut. They influence our metabolism, our immune system, and our relationship with the world around us. Our bodies react to the world around us. Our inherited belonging of nature is flowing through us. Cells get activated when we breathe forest air. Our nervous system relaxes when the receptors of our eyes sense natural elements. The same way, „nature“ is entangled within us, the same are we within „nature. For the better or worse. But we interact all the time with other living organism, landscapes and shape their realities. We are one.
The idea of a separation between human and nature is not universal, nor has it existed in the same form throughout history. Yet in modern Western thought, humans have increasingly been understood as separate from nature: as observers, users, and controllers of a world outside themselves. This idea is constantly driving the ecological crisis we are facing.
When nature is understood primarily as a collection of resources, we place ourselves outside the systems that sustain us. We forget that we are not independent from the world we transform.
In this figure, the woman’s veins become the roots of a pea plant. Her head becomes the pea, reaching towards the light. The boundaries between body and plant begin to dissolve. During the making of the figure, it somehow became alive.
But what is she now?
Is she human or plant? Body or ecosystem? Individual or community? by @plantextile

How would the landscapes look like, if it wasn’t us humans who decided what grows where and when or not? We impose on the landscapes and by this, on all other organisms. But what if we found a way to blend ourselves into the landscape and let the landscape blend into the spaces we inhabited? With the work I create I like to think about how we can embrace natural processes like growth and decay into what we create, and by learning to love these processes, we become mutual parts of the landscape.
This work was thoughtfully designed, and then given to the plants, bacteria and algae to overtake and change. I wonder if we were able to do so on big scales. Don’t fight the life that is there, rather support it and try to see beauty in it.

mutualism. Exhibited September 26 @industrabrno curated by @at.gabrielaaa 💛

the long process of making. no matter how long this process is, everything will be eventually return to Mother Earth.

created landscape

created landscape with seeds to make it alive and make a habitat of what I make.

process of growth and decay

The decay process went really fast. Microorganisms loved the weaving and literally ate it.

Destroyed? I am talking about co-creation, this also means to give up control, and let natural processes happening. But what to do when it shall be exhibited and hung?

It was a process of back and forth, and as all the organism need to react what we are doing, I need to react to the destruction of the microorganism. I simply stretched a net and layed the remaining fabric and plants on top.

Pár snímků ze čtvrteční vernisáže výstavy Roots, from the Ground Up 🌱 Výstava opouští tradiční představu o tom, že naše kořeny určuje pouze místo narození nebo národnost. Místo toho zkoumá, jak si pocit sounáležitosti a domova budujeme prostřednictvím paměti, vztahů, sdílených zkušeností a kulturního dědictví. Pětice umělců z různých kulturních prostředí tu rozehrála vrstevnatou konverzaci o identitě, vykořenění a hledání nových kořenů.

A few shots from Thursday’s opening of the Roots, from the Ground Up exhibition 🌱 The exhibition looks beyond the traditional idea that roots are solely connected to a birthplace or nationality. Instead, it explores how our sense of belonging and home is constructed through memory, relationships, shared experiences, and cultural heritage. Five artists from different cultural backgrounds have created a layered conversation about identity, displacement, and the possibility of growing new roots.

This sculpture, exhibited in May in Halle, is called the monster at home.
Its shape is defined by the willow branches I used. I let the process be guided by the forms they offered. At first, it felt more like a discussion than a dialogue. I had my own ideas. The branches resisted. Over time, I settled into the process and began to listen. I followed what the branches wanted to become.
The textiles bring aliveness to the sculpture, even before the plants begin to grow. Different textures, materials, and techniques create a landscape shaped by the branches.
I often think about the idea of the body as a landscape. It is a beautiful thought that connects our bodies to the land. Their similar ways of functioning and their interconnectedness help us understand the relationship between them.
I see these sculptures as landscapes. They contain different terrains and surfaces. Water moves across them in specific ways. Microhabitats emerge.
Then the plants come into play. As they grow, the sculpture begins to change. The textile object almost becomes a plant itself. Or perhaps it remains a landscape, animated by water and seeds. Roots weave themselves into the textile. Boundaries dissolve. Human, plant, textile, and landscape become one.

How can a new relationship with plants and the living world look like? With this float, hosting plants I am rather looking for a way to easily include plants in the environment. Making them swim on water, creates these new spaces where ecosystems meet. Beyond that, it makes the roots visible which I find very exciting. The dense net of the usual hidden parts of the plants can help us understanding them better and also to value soil as a living ecosystem. Because if we don’t, the plants above can not live healthy either. by @plantextile

How do we as humans blend into the landscape, rather than imposing on her? With this sculpture, I wanted to create a living being, stepping into relation with the surrounding beings, blending into the environment, while becoming a system itself. Created from branches and weaving-“waste” from plant fibres, it will ultimately fall apart and will leave the technical components such as the pump and the water system behind. This sculpture is not only symbolic, it is a space for plants, insects, bacteria and fungi.

From the process: the weaving off cuts from @koseltextil flying in the wind

I love the appearance of these scraps. So fluffy and soft resembling short roots.

Adding the seeds is always this moment in between - this moment before transformation happens. Before the sculpture lookes alive and new life is planted. It is this moment of hope, imagination and dreaming. Most of the seeds I spread across the textile, others, bigger ones I place on certain spots and hide them in the textile.

First seedling are growing & new seeds have arrived

I have spotted many insects coming to drink, here (as far as I know): scarlet fire beatle

A wasp drinking. Here, the textile is already filled with bacteria and fungi, it holds a lot of moisture and the insects love to come and drink.

More insects! Some wild bees visiting 🫶🏼

The fibres mistaken for grass?

Another picture from the process: when the green and white blend in and become one.

The sculpture before I added seeds. Heartfully called the monster. The off cuts + natural organic shapes of the branches make the appearance of the sculpture lively. To me, this is the magic of working with natural materials. Not much is needed and a personality will be there.

Last picture is the one of what I started with 🤍 by @plantextile
