Excited to share that construction of Punkshell starts today!

Punkshell is a pavilion built from 3mm plywood, cut flat and bent into shape. The panels are joined with zip ties alone — no frame, no adhesive. Forcing a flat sheet into a curve introduces internal stresses that the material resists, and that resistance is the structure. It stands without external support and carries the weight of a person.

Over the past months we ran a series of one-to-one scale mockups at the Fabrication Center at the IIT School of Architecture @fabricationcenter whose support has been immense and is deeply appreciated. Today, with our local fabricator @izmade , assembly of the full structure begins.
Punkshell is one of the pavilions selected for exhibition at the IASS-IWSS 2026 @iass.iwss.2026 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, held in Torino, Italy, September 15–18.

This research project was made possible through funding from the IIT School of Architecture @illinoistecharchitecture and the Huckabee College of Architecture at Texas Tech University @ttuhcoa

Developed in late spring last year, “Learning on the Line” proposes an education model for Chicago organized through underused, existing rail infrastructure. Shortlisted in a 2025 ideas competition, the project reimagines the school as a distributed educational system of stationary and mobile learning spaces linked by the Metra Electric corridor.

From April 11, 2025

Last spring I organized SIGHTLINES, a symposium on the mutability of the architectural image. Bringing together James Casebere, David Hartt, Karel Klein, and Olivia Vien, the conversation centered on a simple premise: images do not just document architecture, they construct it. Through photography, montage, and film, the speakers traced how acts of framing, selection, and recomposition shape what can be seen, and just as importantly, what is left out.
