Rainspecter Pt IIIStarted this hike under a steady drizzle. Handrailed an open clearing of stones and shale. Kept walking until the rain let up, swapped layers for a field top and kept moving. Started climbing for a good vantage point. Kept my hasty LP/OP at military crest to allow for a quick egress to the other side of the ridge in case of contact. Spent some time on the hillside, taking in the storm until I stepped off again.For those of you who are actually getting out and training, be deliberate about where and how you move. While it may be easier to walk in open meadows or follow trails and roads, those are the most exposed routes. Think to yourself:- If I was the adversary, where would I want to position myself?- What are the most likely avenues of approach and movement?- Where is my closest cover/egress location and route?Positioning matters. Keep yourself hidden as you move, from both ground and air. Don’t walk into areas that an ambush is likely. Always have an egress plan as you keep moving. Daniel Defense GL/SSCWhen I first heard about this rifle a few months ago, I was intrigued by its story. For those who don’t know, the GL/SSC was essentially a 12.5” Block II/Mk18 hybrid that SOCOM evaluated around 2008 but never fully adopted. It was designed to be the ideal length for a barrel-mounted grenade launcher while remaining short enough to handle well with a suppressor. Hence the name, Grenade Launcher/Sound Suppressor Capable (GL/SSC).Not long after learning about it, I impulsively picked one up and started collecting era-correct parts. This has become a sort of “what if” rifle, had SOCOM selected it. It’s currently equipped with an SU-231 (EOTech 553), PEQ-15, SureFire 4-Prong, and an older SureFire Scout. I’m not a purist when it comes to cloning, so I’ve mixed in a few modern accessories in the name of capability.History aside, I genuinely enjoy shooting this rifle. I’ve always found the Mk18 to have a short length of pull, the 12.5” barrel feels great in the hands. I’m looking forward to putting rounds through this thing.Hopefully this activated some of your GWOTism with this “what if” rifle. Remembering this warrior, Sergeant Todd Matthew Langley, 2nd Commando Regiment, @australianarmy.Sergeant Todd Langley was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he was killed during intense fighting in a Taliban Safe Haven on 4th July 2011 in Afghanistan.Aged 35 at the time of his death, Todd was from the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment.At 17 years old Todd enlisted in the Australian Army, joining the ranks of 1 RAR in 1994 before successfully completing the Commando Selection and Training course in 2004, and being posted to 4RAR Commando now 2nd Commando Regiment.Between the years of 2000 and 2011, Todd deployed a total of 7 times on Operation Tanager - East Timor, Operation Citadel - East Timor and Operation Slipper - Afghanistan. Todd was a decorated soldier, and of note was awarded two Commendations for Distinguished Service.Todd was highly regarded amongst his comrades as a warrior and leader, and continues to inspire the men of the 2nd Commando Regiment to this day. AOR2 in the pines. Works way too good. I’m a firm believer that you should standardize a color/pattern for kit as well as a few patterns for uniforms.
