The moment I fell pregnant in 2016, the toys started arriving.

Then came the endless cycle of milestone marketing…

3 month toys.
6 month toys.
12 month toys.
18 month toys.

And before we knew it, our home was overflowing. Especially the living room. Shelves, baskets, drawers, corners filled with toys that all kind of did the same thing. The years of clutter was so overwhelming for us as parents.

At the time, I genuinely thought this was just part of parenting. More toys meant we were doing a good job. More “educational” toys meant better play.

But over the years, after multiple house moves, countless clean outs and watching my kids grow up, something became really obvious.

The toys that lasted were never the loudest ones. Never the trendiest. Never the ones with the most features or lights.

By age 7, my eldest naturally held onto just a few things from the hundreds we once owned: a beloved soft toy, magnetic tiles and wooden blocks.

The toys that stayed were the ones that made space for imagination.The ones that grew with them. The ones that invited play instead of performing it for them. by @playdwell_

Less “what does it do?” More “what could it be?” 🧩🏰

That’s what I love about open-ended toys. One minute Vera’s building a little house, the next it’s a shop, a castle or something only she can explain 😂 And Valley can join in and explore it all in his own way.

I love watching them come up with games I never would have thought of. Beautiful pieces that leave room for their imaginations to do the fun part @playdwell_ by @playdwell_
