Halloween celebrations can be a great outlet for imaginative and creative play! Costumes allow us to engage in roleplay, storytelling, creative expression and crafting in a way that is often not encouraged. It is also an opportunity to meaningfully connect with our neighbors, friends, and loved ones. How are you engaging with play this Halloween? #playfulsf #play #explore #joy #health #wellness #halloween by @playfulsf.ca
Today’s Feature is the Dreamer play personality. The National Institute for Play describes a dreamer as someone who is energized by the limitless possibilities of the mind and internal world-building. This can be through fantasy, role play, or observation of others playing (sports fans, movie and theatre fans, and readers). Sometimes a silly prop or playful environment is enough to allow us to engage with our imaginations. How do you engage with imaginative play and fantasy in your life? Keep up with us here to learn more about the science of play and hear more about upcoming events! Photo by Kevin Kohl #playfulsf #play #explore #joy #health #wellness by @playfulsf.ca

According to Psychology Today, novelty can activate our brain in powerful ways. When we encounter something new, our brain releases dopamine, a feel-good chemical associated with motivation and pleasure. Novelty can boost creativity, improve memory, and increase happiness (Hall, 2025). Having more new and novel experiences can benefit us all. Our activation at the Waterfront Walkabout offers people the opportunity to be creative and have fun in an unexpected way. The National Institute for Play describes the Explorer as someone who is driven by curiosity and the quest to seek out new knowledge or experiences. This can be through adventure, research, tinkering, emotional exploration, or entrepreneurship. Our July Play Along! event offered an Exploration Station hosted by Play Ambassador Gregangelo Herrera. Here, participants had the opportunity to explore through scent. How do you like to explore? Keep up with us here to learn more about the science of play and our upcoming events! “Play is like oxygen. It’s all around us, totally vital to life, but goes unnoticed until it’s missing.” Dr. Stuart Brown, Founder of the National Institute for Play People of all ages need play. When you hear about play, it’s understandable to think about it as something only children do, but we all play. Have you ever felt worn out because you haven’t had the chance to be active or express yourself creatively? Play is something that we can easily ignore until we feel its absence. Reconnect with your playful self at our upcoming event on October 15th! Keep up with us here for updates. #playfulsf #play #connection #joy #health #wellness by @playfulsf.ca
