Writing begins long before a child holds a pencil correctly.

An early years educator’s perspective.

These skills develop gradually through play and everyday experiences.

These activities may look simple…

but they are helping prepare the muscles and coordination children later need for writing.

When we rush children straight into tracing letters and worksheets, we may miss the foundations underneath.
These skills take time to develop.

One thing I often emphasise as an early years educator is that writing does not begin with worksheets.

A child squeezing playdough is strengthening the small muscles of the hand.

A child using tongs is developing finger control.

A child threading beads is practising hand-eye coordination.

Rather than rushing the pencil, let us strengthen the foundations first.

Because confident writing develops when children are physically and developmentally ready for it. 🌱

Save this post if you are supporting a young child with early writing skills.

Kitchen is one of my favourite and first place to start the activities for young children. Also, you don’t need to buy anything and use resources from your kitchen to make learning happen. Swipe through the slides……

At first glance, it may look like a simple shape-matching activity. But every time a child picks up a shape, turns it, and fits it onto the correct pegs, they are building essential skills that support their overall development.

This is one of my favourite hands-on resources because it encourages children to learn by doing while having fun.

🌟 What is the child actually learning?

🟡 Shape recognition (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon)
🟢 Visual discrimination and observation skills
🔵 Problem-solving through trial and error
🟠 Spatial awareness – understanding how shapes fit and rotate
🟣 Hand-eye coordination
🔴 Fine motor skills and finger strength
🟤 Bilateral coordination (using both hands together)
⚪ Concentration, patience and perseverance
🟡 Logical thinking and early mathematical concepts

One of my absolute favourite resources to use during my teaching is dot stickers. They’re inexpensive, versatile, and packed with learning opportunities!

When a child sticks a dot sticker on the letter “a” or carefully follows a zig-zag line, they aren’t just completing a fun activity—they’re building essential skills for future learning.

🟣 Every peel, pinch, place and press is strengthening:
• Fine motor skills
• Pincer grip and finger strength
• Hand-eye coordination
• Visual tracking
• Focus and concentration
• Letter recognition
• Pencil control and pre-writing skills

These small movements lay the foundation for writing, drawing, cutting with scissors, buttoning clothes and many other everyday tasks.

The best learning often looks like play, and that’s exactly why dot stickers remain one of my go-to teaching resources. 💜

Sometimes, the simplest activities create the strongest foundations.

One beautiful thing about knob puzzles?

They teach independence.

Children can see immediately if the piece fits — no adult correction required.

This builds confidence:
“I did it myself!”

And confidence is the foundation of all future learning 🌟

When children feel emotionally secure, they explore more, ask questions, and try without fear of failure.

Being seen means noticing their efforts, emotions, and individuality — not just the final result.

Being supported means guiding with patience, not rushing or doing things for them.

Calm, nurturing environments help children grow confident, independent, and curious learners — every single day.

Children learn best when they choose the play.
From sand play to block towers to pretend “zoo,” I saw how child-initiated play builds confidence, creativity, and independence.
🌱 Let them lead — and watch the magic unfold.

Play is at the heart of early childhood learning. In any early years setting, it is essential to create safe, engaging, and stimulating environments where children can explore freely and at their own pace.

As practitioners, we observe children’s interests, provide meaningful resources, and balance both child-initiated and adult-led activities. Whether it’s role-play, sensory exploration, outdoor experiences, or simple story sessions, each moment of play supports a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

Connecting with parents, offering ideas for home play, and ensuring consistent opportunities for choice and creativity help strengthen the child’s learning journey beyond the classroom.

Every day, and in every setting, play remains a powerful tool for growth — and a fundamental right for every child. by @playlearnrise
