A Study in Dirt • In many ways I’ve been hesitant to ever call myself a pedal collector, because I use them all, I swear. But at the same time, one of my favorite things in the study of the guitar is cataloguing its heritage as a sound instrument; to be beautiful, to be noisy, and everything in between. Whether it’s Jimi, Sabbath, Yo la Tengo, GY!BE, hell even Weezer (obviously I am not naming SO many), the relationship of the guitar to overdrive, distortion and fuzz is one that has permanently cracked open our hearts and left our ears ringing. From busted up sounds to reflect a busted up world to gentle overtones that speak out some lost secret…music would never be the same.

These are the dirt pedals that are with me these days. I’ve certainly let a few good ones get away. If you find the time, I’d love to hear what’s your flavor, your favorite dirty tones and your relationship to the guitar in this way.

Improv jam leaning into the drive and chorus from the @brokenboxaudio Concrete Cowboy. It’s one of those pedals that has no bad settings and just immediately vibes. by @playofliite

Here’s an honest one 😮‍💨 It’s incredible what not being able to play for 2+ months can do to your GOOD hand! Getting warmed in feels good with the Mariner tho.

Shea Guitars #34: The Mariner . . .

Guitar / Health / Story-time post incoming:

About 4 months ago, I took the exciting leap of ordering a custom guitar with @sheaguitars. It was Will’s newest model and spoke to me in various ways. Something simultaneously serious and playful. Something acoustic and electric. Something classic and completely new. Nothing but positive anticipation ahead.

Then, about 2 months ago, I took a fall from a window ledge that left me with a shattered wrist and fractured elbow, a broken nose, a couple broken teeth, and various stitches. And about a month later, when they removed the cast from my arm, I found I could barely move it, let alone do anything like play or even pick up a guitar…

As it turns out, in the past month I’ve been healing pretty well. I got really lucky. And you can imagine my joy when I finally received the Mariner (the aforementioned guitar) and found it was not only gorgeous, but about as light as the weights I’m currently starting to use in physical therapy. I think we’ve got a 5-pounder!

Talking with Will throughout the guitar build process was an absolute pleasure. Getting progress pics that eventually became a book documenting the build, along with a surprise keychain made from the same wood as the fretboard, made the whole experience not just special, but motivating.

So, I really like this guitar, and it now represents my healing, a goal, and a reminder of my love of music, guitar, and the ability to create and express with my hands. Thanks @sheaguitars

TL;DR:
I ordered a custom guitar.
I shattered my wrist.
I’m learning healing takes time.
This guitar is motivating me to fully get back in the game. 🙏🏻 by @playofliite

A bit of a double homage here we’re calling CHUNGS BUNGY. Thanks for the fun prompt @dirgeelectronics & CHUNGUS. First moment I’ve found to pick up the pen in a minute, and I’m always glad for that. by @playofliite

Typical Strat stuff…
Continuing to learn the @chasebliss MOOD and the @weareelektron Model:Cycles and they seem to be coming into a sound of their own together. It’s been a fun new thing to document the learning process and share it here. Maybe time to start writing with this pair.

Still on the journey of unpacking boxes, but the exciting part is sometimes you unpack something that hasn’t left its box in a long time. It would be fair to say that I’ve had the @weareelektron model cycles for about a year and I’m finally starting to learn it. Learning a new instrument can be a kick (drum) of inspiration. Let’s see where this goes!

Back at it… slowly getting gear out of boxes after a big move and picking up right where I left off getting to know the @chasebliss MOOD MKii. Lately, I love to finish long improv sessions with just leaving a drone running for some time and pretending I’m 1/10th of GY!BE. Hope to share fuller and higher quality audio soon ✌🏻 by @playofliite

Another first impressions clip, this time with the @chasebliss MOOD mkii, and gosh, there can be such a joy to not knowing what you’re doing. Also shoutout to @ericnyffeler for such pretty pedals 😍

NPD and it’s a good one! I’ve been apparently holding out since 2019 to grab a @dirgeelectronics Slowly Melting (life circumstances and such) and oh my was it worth it. Beyond the pedal sounding great it’s truly a piece of art and I’m so on board with the put your heart in your art aesthetic of it all.

I’ve been enjoying playing with dirt lately which is funny considering I’ve been binging Boards of Canada, but there is something great about sitting down with a new sound-maker and seeing what sounds it pulls out of you. So here’s the first few jams with Slowly Melting. Sorry for the cell phone audio..I’ll do better one day.

Thanks @dirgeelectronics and @relicmusicshop. Melt forever 🫠 by @playofliite
