These eye-catching benches are fun, but were designed to serve a higher purpose. Called Future Benches, these installations were a part of a large-scale awareness campaign coordinated by @tv2denmark and the city. Each of the fifteen benches throughout the municipality provide visible thought to the possible impacts of climate change in Copenhagen. These elevated seats simulate the anticipated sea level rise (1 meter) by the end of the century. It’s interactive, tangible evidence that calls for action.

Public art with purpose - and permission! “Please Be Seated” by London-based artist @paulcocksedge doesn’t simply elicit notions of sustainability (these are reclaimed scaffolding boards), but PLAY. Visitors are strongly encouraged to touch, sit and wander over, under, or on this installation. Scroll to see it in action!

Comprised of near- 1,200 pieces of wood destined for garbage, “Please Be Seated” is 50 feet (15.5 meters) wide and almost 11.5 feet (3.4 meters) tall at its highest point.

If you weren’t lucky enough to catch it in London, perhaps you can visit it in it’s more permanent homes of Beijing and Hong Kong.

A towering 20’ feet of steel, @alexandrearrechea’s sculpture, Orange Functional, connects the communal themes of sports and public space.

Previously hosted in galleries and nestled in a street center, (Image 3), it’s a piece that calls for movement, play, and an appreciation of street culture. Searches online demonstrated its installation as both interactive and solitary display, but we’ll admit — we’d have a tough time resisting a shot or two! 🏀

Tree house, level up: Projects by @treeweaves are ultimate creative examples of activated play in a natural environment. Utilizing the custom topography, age and spatial elements of an area, the designers create one-of-a-kind installations that not only honor their setting’s natural range of motion, but encourage appreciation of nature by offering close interaction with it. Not to mention, they’re beautiful!

What do you think? Would you be caught climbing to the top of one of these tree nets?

These aren’t just painted streets. They’re a symbol of visibility, a testament to urban safety, and a prime example of civic collaboration.

All of the art OUTSIDE, baby. Let’s access the masses and celebrate color, community and creativity at every stop. This is a @minimurals project beautifully illustrated by @averyodesign in Texas. Yes, there’s a functional electrical box under there, but so much more fun to look at! These projects may seem small, but they require a ton of coordination to pull off. We’re talking community buy-in and coordination from multiple organizations like Economic Development, Police Departments, City Councils and Art Commissions. We see you and thank you for the extraordinary gallery on-the-go! 🦋 💜 🌸

This is a StoryWalk and, as such, serves as an outdoor, all-weather access point to literacy and imagination. What a fun way to liven up sidewalks and schoolyards!

The StoryWalk®️ Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the @kellogghubbard Library. StoryWalk®️ is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

Outside, inside, play where you are! We admire @youji_no_shiro for this unifying outdoors-in school design in support of ‘Creating a Forest in the City.’ no Shiro’s work is natural, opportunistic, and youthful. We’d be climbing this banyan tree too!

Call it what you will - tactical urbanism, placemaking, prototyping, etc. - the concept of designing pavement for the people is simply where it’s at. Healthy communities happen where there are safe opportunities for community and connection.

Agora Maximus, a project by @mlauzon_laab, is a parklet that serves as a gathering point for public events from civic meetings to theatrical performances. We just love the liveliness it bring out in this space! 👏🏽

This courtyard in a residential complex was designed to be intimate with nature, allowing its natural vegetation to grow high. It’s nice to imagine that the careful selection and retention of natural surroundings is an important reminder to visitors of what was here before and how humans have been invited into its space, not the other way around.
