A day of dance on one of our past Educational People-to-People tours, with our querida profesora, @jennygalata , sharing the movements of Changó, Orisha of thunder, fire and drums.

Dancing with live batá drummers and singers makes all the difference. The musicians and dancers listen to each other, and every change in the rhythm is answered with a movement. @tikamorgan.dance @luizguzman9712

Inside the dance studios of the Escuela Nacional de Arte (La ENA) in Havana, where young dancers train in both Afro-Cuban folkloric and modern dance. (Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte de Cuba - CNEArt)

In the folkloric sessions, the maestras correct every detail, from the swing of the long blue skirts to the position of the arms. In the modern dance studio, the same dancers work on technique, floor work and improvisation.

Training in both styles is part of what makes Cuban dancers so versatile: they carry the movements of their traditions into contemporary choreography.

@ildolidiaramos dancing for Oshún and @jennygalata dancing for Yemayá, two of Cuba’s leading maestras of Afro-Cuban folkloric dance.

In the Lucumí tradition, brought to Cuba by the Yoruba people during the transatlantic slave trade, each Orisha has their own colors, rhythms and movements. Oshún, Orisha of rivers, love and sweetness, wears yellow and gold, and her dance is flirtatious and joyful, often with a fan and bracelets that ring as she moves. Yemayá, mother of all and Orisha of the sea, wears blue and white, and her skirts sway like waves.

Known collectively as Las Dos Aguas (The Two Waters), they rule over the world’s major water bodies and share a profound connection, beautifully symbolized by their embrace at the end of the dance.

A jazz descarga in a Havana garden during the Festival Jazz Plaza International , with @robertofonsecamusic on piano, Gastón Joya on bass, Carlos Miyares on sax, and Ruly Herrera taking a drum solo.

A descarga is the Cuban jam session: musicians start from a simple idea and build on it, trading solos as they go. Watch Ruly take the lead on drums while the rest of the band backs him up.

(Thank you to @rickswig for putting together such an amazing event.)

A master class taught by Victor Goines of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán in Havana in 2016.

This amazing class was organized by @hornstohavana as part of their Jazz Education programs in Havana schools. Watch the young clarinetist who stands up for the solo: Luis Miguel Sánchez Nelson @luismiguel_sn is now a member of Havana D’Primera, one of Cuba’s top timba orchestras.

Moments like this show where a musician’s path begins: a classroom, a student big band, and the chance to play for one of the great names in American jazz.

In loving memory of Maestro Leonel Menéndez Murray 🙏 @leonelmenendezm

Leonel, artistic and general director of the Ballet Folklórico de Mayabeque, Orisha Oko, and long-time member of @raicesprofundascuba, passed away in Havana on October 6. He dedicated his life to preserving Afro-Cuban roots and bringing them to the stage, and he trained generations of folkloric dancers who carry his legacy forward.

For many years, Leonel was part of the PlazaCUBA family. Here he is doing what he loved most: sharing the movements of Afro-Cuban dance with patience, energy and a big smile, to the rhythm of the drums.

Thank you, Leo. We will miss you.

Pupy giving a master class in Havana, playing “La Candela” with a small format of Los Que Son Son just for our group. Pupy Pedroso & Los que Son Son @pupy_y_losquesonson

César “Pupy” Pedroso spent more than 30 years as pianist and one of the main songwriters of Los Van Van before founding Los Que Son Son. PlazaCUBA set up this private class, where Pupy shared his music and his story with our group and other Cuban musicians. You can see how much he enjoyed teaching, smiling the whole time.

We miss Pupy, and we’re grateful for moments like this one.

Parque Central, in the heart of Havana, is surrounded by some of the city's most important buildings.

The Capitolio, inaugurated in 1929, got its gold-covered dome back in 2019, just as it looked 90 years ago. The Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso is home of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. And at the center of the park stands the statue of José Martí, unveiled in 1905.

You can still see some classic American cars from the 1950s lined up in front of Hotel Parque Central - one of Havana's most recognizable symbols.

Join us to learn about Havana's history through its architecture and its people.
