I didn’t even tell my Daddy I’d applied to dental school in Chicago, only Mama. Daddy lived in the burbs there for one year in the 70s as an intern pastor and that’s where he’d met Mama, the youngest member of Church Council. He didn’t exactly love the cold, big city and couldn’t understand why anyone would want to move away from “home”. When I finally broke the news to him, he wudn’t having it. Refused to help me move. So Mama and I loaded up a U-Haul and my tiny Civic and made the long drive. She helped me unload furniture and all my ficus trees—the staple of a 2000s apartment—to my 5th floor studio apartment in downtown. It must have been 100°, the air wasn’t working yet…but she was there.

My biggest fan all along. How I miss you, for the ups and downs, but mostly the really average days too. You were always up for it.

Elvis intro: my sweet, sweet friend @meagansburnett was rehoming this preshycakes 5yo mini Aussiedoodle before Thanksgiving, and somehow we got lucky enough to inherit Elvis. I saw a post about him and jokingly said we’d take him…which tracks for my friendship with Meagan: in 2022, with maybe 6 days’ notice, she agreed to come to London with me to do my glam for a speaking engagement. She’d named Elvis for her PawPaw who always dyed his hair jet-black and who’d passed shortly before she got Elvis. All my friends know I roll deep on a deceased celebrity—Elvis Presley was the first. Turns out, Elvis the doggy is only 6 weeks younger than Harold, and these 2 handsome things are getting on so well. After losing sweet Beatrice last fall, I didn’t know what kind of 2nd doggy we’d get but boy, did we hit the doggy jackpot with Elvis, our sweet teddy bear🐈‍⬛ by @plessdds
