Turntable percussion at Cal Arts Experiments in Electronic Sound Festival 2026

Thanks to @clay_chaplin_music and all the absolutely outstanding team behind this (who recorded this video and audio live last night).

I use the turntable as a percussion setup rather than a playback deck.

Attacks, damping, resonance, and amplified mechanical noise are organized in real time. The result sits somewhere between free improvisation, live electronics, and extended percussion.

I’m bringing this practice to the Experiments in Electronic Sound Festival at CalArts, as part of the concert on Saturday, September 26 at 8pm in the Roy O. Disney Concert Hall.

Glad to be part of a wider three-night program that also includes Blevin Blectum, Dean Spunt, Nerve Maps, Kerrith Livengood, Colin Drake, and many others. The concerts are free and will be livestreamed.

I usually don't use digital vinyl (serato and other DVS) but when I do... It's for that insane glitchy aesthetic you get from messing with resynthesized sounds of playing small samples very slowly. (Also a ring mod at 1.6khz is nicely glitching this even further).

Anyway, playing next week at CalArts near LA! by @plopesmusic

I play turntables as instruments. This is an excerpt of a concert at Soup (Tokyo), where I'm using the needles as microphones to amplify percussion on turntables. by @plopesmusic

What I love about this setup is how much sound exists in a single gesture: the hit, the reverb of the cymbal, the muting pressure of the hand, and the unstable overtones, the needle skipping. It is part percussion, part resonance study.

For me, this is where the turntable becomes most interesting — not as a device for replaying sound, but as a machine for producing new relationships between objects.

My instrument is the turntable—but the practice is not quite DJing, and it is not simply scratching.

I approach turntables more like percussion: striking, bowing, preparing, amplifying, interrupting, and sometimes rebuilding them. The turntable can become a resonator, a sound microscope, or an unpredictable musical partner.

This account is a new home for that work: performances, unusual instruments, collaborations, archival recordings, and the techniques behind the sounds.

Welcome to turntable percussion.
