From the beginning, Karly and George’s priority was clear. Not just having Odie there, but making sure he felt safe through a day filled with unfamiliar sounds, weather shifts, and big emotions. Colorado storms are unpredictable. Dogs with thunder-specific anxiety even more so. So we planned for calm, adjusted when needed and stayed responsive throughout the day. Odie wasn’t managed. He was supported. And that meant K + G could stay focused on each other, knowing their dog was settled, regulated, and exactly where he needed to be. This week’s vulnerable share was met with so much reciprocity for feeling. I’m overcome with love, but I’m not the least bit surprised. I have been having 1:1 conversations with you in my DMs for four years, but it took me sharing a fear thought about Chaco to realize…we all need this community. What Plus the Pups does is really special; we provide a safe space for dogs on wedding days. But we also foster an environment where our clients feel safe enough to ask us for exactly what they need in order to feel at peace about their dogs being woven into their celebrations, just as they are woven into their lives. Our recent conversation helped me realize there is a desire to share our feelings of love and grief for our dogs, and it extends far beyond just wedding clients. So without further ado, I’m sooooo excited to formally invite you to join Off Leash, a community of humans who love their dogs something fierce, and oftentimes have big emotions about it. We were gabbing about birthdays one day when @miosison mentioned he never really celebrated his. I asked him what his dream birthday was, thinking he’d list off some casual hang with friends. Wrong. Mio spit out a few verrrrrrry particular details: Elevated western attire with a touch of something blue. Traditional Filipino food on banana leaves. Decor that matched his brand colors. And a mocha mousse cake from his childhood. All set in a remote field near the cabin where I live. Casual, lol. So I thought “sure, I can do that,” while secretly taking notes. Of course, I have zero chill and I’m a detail queen, so I tied in a few more of his favorite things: custom cocktail napkins with mangos wearing cowboy hats, place cards with lyrics from his fav Ella song where guests could write a core memory, a spiral garden cake moment, and mango refreshments. I pulled in some dear friends, clued them in on the general vibe (which was incredibly eclectic but somehow all tied together), and let them run wild with their crafts. And every single one of them created a bit of magic. My favorite moment from the day, aside from watching Mio realize all the little details, was walking the spiral garden in the rain, and eating cake on the truck tailgate. A truly perfect end to a beautifully chaotic day. S/O to @thenouveauromantics for being my sounding board, helping hands, and reining me in when my imagination ran a little too wild. And to my neighbor, who so graciously let me host this soirée in his meadow at the very last moment. @king_bentley_bear is basically a teddy bear wearing a bandana under a wedding veil…of course it’s cute 🥹 But what I actually see when I look at this is a gal who teared up every single time she looked at her baby boy on her wedding day. Because their bond is that strong, and her love for him is that pure. This is the one moment Lauren asked for with Bentley, and playing a role in making sure she has these memories to cherish forever will never get old. Do it before you have it all figured out, because who you become in the process of building your dream life is the whole point. I’m just glad I opted for my whole point to be anchored in making sure dogs feel safe and supported, because it brought some of my favorite humans into my life. Memories from night before (and some, the night before that). Wedding weekends call for early mornings (at times, as early as 7am) and late nights (midnight +) so it’s no surprise that when we’re not supporting your babies at a scheduled celebration, such as your pre-welcome party, welcome party or rehearsal, our time together is comprised mainly of walks, treats and lots of floor cuddles. Full-circle founder moment 🤍 Last August, I booked a flight to South Carolina on a total whim, attended Charleston’s @thesocieteprivee chapter brunch, and fell in love with the Lowcountry. So much so, that I told The Universe I wanted Chaco to experience it. A few weeks later, our first wedding in the South was booked. Building a brand based on the foundation of never leaving the dogs behind, it only seemed fitting to, eight months later (on another sporadic whim), get in my car and drive 26 hours South East. Would it have been easier to fly in for my quick work trip? Sure. But I’ve never been one to base my life’s decisions on what’s easiest. Aside from the wedding weekend, which took place Thursday through Saturday, I had not one plan. Truly, I was flying by the seat of my pants for two weeks. And I sure am glad I surrendered to wherever the wind wanted to blow me, because in doing so, I made a new friend, fell in love with a charming little town, and experienced so many firsts alongside the dog that is my reason for just about everything. So, yes, I suppose you could say I deeply understand the innate reflex to inconvenience your life at any given moment so your dog can experience it all alongside you. And it’s always worth it. Book the flight on a whim. Step into rooms before you feel ready. Road trip without a single plan. Let life unfold without attachment.
