On January 11th, I lost my Dad. It was completely unexpected—I found him outside in his chair, motionless. I did everything I could to bring him back, but he was already gone. Since then, I haven’t spoken to many people and debated whether to share this online. But I feel that his life and what he meant to me—to us—deserve to be shared. Here’s some of what I wrote during that first week and ultimately what I shared at his funeral: It’s wild how two days can feel light years apart. Yesterday, I felt whole, and today, completely fractured. My Dad was sturdy—a monument of integrity and character. He was immovable and unbreakable. And I think that’s what makes this almost impossible to comprehend: how something so steadfast can be ripped away in the blink of an eye. Through the good and the bad, I always knew I had him—a beacon and a foundation. His love never faltered, and he gave us all of himself. He was my lighthouse, my boat, my port in the storm. I think most of us view our parents as heroes in the beginning—pinnacles of principle and what to strive for. If we’re lucky, we grow with them and come to see them as humans, just trying their best in an unfair world. And while that’s true for me, I never stopped seeing my dad as the hero he was. I’ve always been acutely aware of life’s finiteness, spending most of my days ensuring my last interactions with loved ones ended well. But in the end, I didn’t have that chance with my dad. If there’s one thing I’ve learned since it happened, it’s that you’ll always wish you had more time—that you did more with the time you had. But nothing in the world can make it hurt less. I only wish I had gotten to say goodbye. Hug your loved ones. Let them know how much they mean to you. What you have today isn’t guaranteed tomorrow. Love you, Dad. by @pmcdonvld
