When a child is wrongfully removed to or retained in Indonesia, having a foreign custody order does not necessarily mean the child can be automatically returned.

Indonesia is not a party to the 1980 Hague Child Abduction Convention. While Indonesia has a domestic framework for child protection and has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, cross-border enforcement remains a complex issue.

In these cases, protecting the child’s best interests may require a coordinated legal strategy across jurisdictions.

We are proud to share that our Partner, Prawidha Murti, was invited as a panelist at the IAFL Asia Pacific Chapter & Malaysian Bar Council Symposium: Burning Issues and Trends in International Family Law, held in Kuala Lumpur on 19 May 2026.

Ms. Prawidha joined an esteemed panel of international practitioners and experts in Session 1: “What is HOT in Property Division in Cross-Border Disputes?”, discussing current developments and emerging challenges in cross-border family law matters alongside distinguished speakers from Malaysia, the Netherlands, England & Wales, and Canada.

We are honored to see her contribute to an important regional dialogue hosted by the International Academy of Family Lawyers and the Malaysian Bar Council, reflecting the growing importance of international collaboration in family law practice across jurisdictions.

Deeply grateful to Shu Mei Hoon and Drew & Napier LLC for the kind invitation to join such an insightful and engaging roundtable discussion in Singapore.

It was truly an honour to be part of a discussion alongside distinguished family law practitioners from across multiple jurisdictions, exchanging perspectives on cross-border family law developments and the challenges increasingly faced by international families today.

I am especially grateful for the opportunity to share and discuss Indonesian legal perspectives and issues within the broader international context. These conversations are incredibly valuable in building better understanding between jurisdictions and strengthening cooperation among practitioners handling complex cross-border matters.

Beyond the discussions themselves, it was wonderful to reconnect with old friends, make new connections, and experience the strong collegiality that continues to define the international family law community.

Prawidha & Co extends its appreciation to the IAFL Asia Pacific Chapter for the opportunity for our CEO, Prawidha Murti, to speak at the AP Hour this April.

Prawidha joined Bernice Loo, with Caroline McNally moderating, to discuss “Matrimonial Asset or Protected Wealth? The Role of Trusts in Divorce Proceedings in Indonesia and Singapore.”

The session provided an engaging discussion on how trusts are approached in divorce proceedings across both jurisdictions, including practical challenges surrounding recognition and enforceability, as well as perspectives from both settlors and beneficiaries.

We are grateful for the insightful exchange and thoughtful questions from fellow practitioners across the region, and we look forward to continuing the conversation on cross-border family wealth and dispute resolution.
