My first “backpacking” trip. An OP overlooking Kajaki Dam in Helmand Province Afghanistan 🇦🇫 The OP and FOB were ran by the Royal Marines and in the process of being handed over to the U.S. Marine Corps.

I got to sleep under the stars all night and drink proper tea all day with the Royal Marines. It was supposed to be a shorter trip but a helicopter was shot down and we ended up being in a no fly zone and the surrounding area was controlled by the Taliban so we were hanging out there until the airspace opened.

This is what started my love for backpacking. by @pnw.backpacker

Six years ago I asked myself “what makes me happy” and I looked at what I’ve done that’s actually made me happy. I remembered being on top of a mountain in Afghanistan, sleeping under the stars every night. After that I started backpacking and it’s brought be so much peace.
