Pocket Utopia summer reading project! 📖👓🤓📚

Jennifer Samet’s remarkable Beer with a Painter series or @jensamet 😊

copy this link https://hyperallergic.com/tag/beer-with-a-painter/

❤️ @hyperallergic

I’m nowhere near finished

maybe that’s the point

one at a time slowly

Every interview offers something unexpected

Right now I’m reading the conversation with Samia Halaby, peering into her work/her world from Jerusalem to Cincinnati and now in the current Whitney Biennial

Thank you Jennifer Samet/Hyperallergic for creating such a generous archive

And for kindly allowing me to share a few images

I am making my way through these interviews:

🍺 with
Pat Adams
Samia Halaby
Sam Gilliam
Sarah McEneaney
John Lees
Michael Berryhill
Clare Grill
Mary Lovelace O’Neal
Mernet Larsen

Head lice

But otherwise a Pocket Utopia behind the scenes with Kristin Cronic

A Kristin Cronic portfolio

Cultivating a sneak peek and a documenting of ordinary moments treated with extraordinary attention

the everyday already contains so much!

Kristin is a painter, mother of three, veteran, and educator

Turning attention to the fleeting architecture of family life, Kristin honors, or rather bears witness to childhood as a temporary choreography

the quiet generosity of her daily drawings:
1. Here we go again (lice, part 2)
2. Bedside table (Olaf and a Lego heart and birthday decorations from February)
3. The stairs are also lava
4. Short order cook (cereal then milk then eggs then chocolate milk then orange slices then strawberries)
5. Birthday Party favors in the studio
6. Sleepover in baby sister’s room
7. Shoes
8. Walk negotiations
9. Playing cards and play food
10. Let’s see if we can kick this ball and break the car window (let’s not)
11. Blue lice comb
12. the collection at the bottom of the stairs
13.flower socks and pink panties (quick change in the studio)
14. Tree swing

It’s about paying attention. by @pocket.utopia

Cultivating Pocket Utopia
with Traci Johnson @ tracijohnsonart
In Asbury Park, NJ
At the public library

Thankfully, they let me tag along

I joined artist Traci Johnson for one of her Safe Space Diorama workshops
where participants imagine and build small places of comfort and possibility in a shoebox-sized space steps from the ocean

Connections made

Cultivating a new space

And making it meaningful together

Traci has an open studio in New Brunswick in a couple of weeks from now

look it up here https://www.artcitynewbrunswick.org

See ya on Friday, July 10, maybe we discover another part of New Jersey
from 5:00-8:00 pm

more Traci:
creating Safe Spaces where softness, spirituality, and Black queer imagination can exist without apology, where personal healing becomes collective ❤️

Danielle Dimston.

Danielle Dimston’s biomorphic forms sit somewhere between blueprint and dream, painted lines, mazes, plans, and dwellings unfolding in real time.

Ellen Letcher - The Big Room, 2026, Gouache and inkjet prints on panel, 10 x 8 inches

A bleeding gun and it’s reverberation seems poignant. Fragments collide with Letcher, and a reference to a Julie Torres painting on the upper left with Magritte’s bleeding gun on the right.

Yes to the No Kings March!

Lead with Love, Not Anger.
Focus your energy on what you stand for, not what you stand against. Anger fades; compassion lasts.
Smile and Greet Others.
Say hello, wave, or share a word of encouragement. Small acts of friendliness build community trust and lower tension.
Lift Your Voice with Positivity.
Joy is contagious. The more you smile, sing, and stay grounded, the safer and stronger everyone around you feels.
Make Your Sign Speak Peace.
Choose messages that uplift-creative, clever, values-based signs draw attention without aggression or profanity.
Model Nonviolence in Every Action.
If confronted, breathe, stay calm, and step back. Do not engage or argue, alert a Guardian in an orange vest.
Look Out for One Another.
Offer water, a smile, or friendly chat to someone nearby. Check on families, elders, and people with mobility needs.
Celebrate Families and Kids.
Keep the atmosphere family-friendly, and invite children to join in with chants and songs-joyful ways to express civic pride.
Keep It Clean and Respectful.
Leave our rally space as beautiful as you found it-or better. Treat it with respect, care, and gratitude for peace.
Be Mindful of Words & Tone.
Speak with kindness, even when disagreeing. Avoid insults, sarcasm, or chants that demean others.
Carry Joy Beyond the Rally.
After the event, share stories, photos, and reflections that highlight unity and courage-show the world what peaceful power looks like. by @pocket.utopia
