POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This post is a detour from my usual posting, but it’s art and I had to share this experience.
On June 29, 2025, I went to see Holy Shit Improv / Comedian Clash at Four Day Weekend. I had never been to this venue, but a college friend had mentioned it before so I was excited to see what a show here was like. I was especially looking forward to the comedians performing that night from famous sitcoms, YouTube channels, SNL, improv shows, cartoons. Standing in line for the show, I met another Smosh fan with a ‘Spud Hut’ tote bag and we made excited small talk and decided to sit together. I was offered the chance to volunteer and be a part of the show at the door and I of course took it. When they announced volunteers for the second game of ‘not family feud but family fued’ I was chosen. The second game was going to happen after a 10 minute stand-up set, so we all went upstairs to the green room overseeing the stage and waited. I tried not to fanboy, but I definitely hovered juuuust a little bit around Chanse McRary and eventually he asked me what the journal sticking out of my front pocket was for. I told him it was for sketches and doodles. and I asked if he wanted to draw as we waited. He said yes, asked me what he should draw, I said a potato, and he laughed and got to work on a good ol spud.
This drawing of a spud is a one of a kind Chanse McCrary ( @phatchanse ) and a wonderful memory. I was on the same team as Colton Dunn ( @captdope ) during the game show and our team won! (Likely no thanks to me because I apparently am not good at this game, but I got a lot of laughs so I still feel I contributed to our success). After the show I asked Chanse and Colton if I could get a photo with them and as you can see, they said yes. They were both great in real life. A little tired from all the traveling, but super friendly, happy to talk, and looking forward to the rest of the show. I shook Colton’s hand in the parking lot, told him how great it was to meet him, and went home with a huge smile on my face soo ready to call my bestie to relay this story to her. This is my story about the potato I have in my sketchbook.

These sketches and doodles were drawn up leading to me moving apartments. The first one, which is technically the last, is a POV from my bed on one of my last nights in apartment 3096 during the chaos of packing. Boxes (la la land boxes) and crates line the wall and my plants are still everywhere because I was going to personally move those after the movers helped with everything else. The other sketches were drawn at Makers Space with Suzie again after attending a comedy show at Four Day Weekend. The fish in the trees is a personal callback to an inktober challenge I enjoyed a lot with the suggestion ‘fish’, and the head above the fence is what I looked like at the time since I had a scraggly beard and wore bandanas and sunglasses more than usual.

I was hanging out with Suzie over at Dallas Maker’s Space during these first four. I met her at Stomping Ground doing classes and we became good friends. Every now and then I’d accompany her while she did ceramic work and we’d yap and do art together. There’s an artist named Leonid Afremov who does these beautifully colorful rainy impressionist paintings, very often of dancers or lovers amongst city park sidewalks by street lamps and benches. This first sketch is inspired from those paintings. The second is 100% a #pinterest collage. The third is very playful, a bunch of lightly placed lines and circular shapes to mimic a wave and its foam. Then it gets more abstract. Thanks to those who followed me from last night :) You are all very sweet.

What a jump of time this one has! It interesting to know that the first picture was drawn on a visit back to West Oak to hang with Royce, but a lot were done at Wayward, one of my new coffee haunts I came across after I moved to White Rock, started working at Stomping Grounds and La La Land. A lot were done on 5.19.2025 because that day I realized I had not really tried to draw something satisfying in so long. In my sketchbook between these two dates there are a lot of daily/improv notes and odd lil doodles but no real pages dedicated to art!

Most of these were done on 11.13.2024 because i was hanging out with a friend who also likes to draw. These were done rapid fire with so much joy. The last (which chronologically is technically first) was drawn from a self refernce photo- I thought I’d do a project with it but that idea didn’t get too far!

this one has more playfulness to it, less cohesion than i know how to group together. There’s some found objects taken from a book about maximalism found at an oddities store, an obscure cave inspired by a piece seen at a house show, a view from the second floor of a mall, a bold POV sketch of a room from #pinterest, some explorative lines. I had just moved from Denton to White Rock before these.

Somewhere during these months I think I read a self-help book… I think. I also drew at West Oak.

Whoa! Looks like some of the were done at West Oak! A special shoutout to #pinterest and Royce for the constant supply of inspiration and caffeine. When I was drawing at this time I was mainly looking for things that looked fun to draw, but every now and then I’d really want to focus on something I hadn’t learned which is why slide 5 is full of shape renderings. Also slide 3 is full of cats because I wanted to draw a cat for one of my fav baristas, Lauryn, I wonder if she still has her cat sticky note.

Some more things drawn at West Oak! Was really into terrariums at the time, hence slide 3. The last slide is a collage of quick-glance doodles of people at the shop, s/o to helmet man whose name ended up being Justin.

@ WO means it was drawn at West Oak in downtown Denton, which is a lil tag you’ll see a lot in these upcoming posts!
Btw, the gazebo in slide 3 is the gazebo in downtown Carrolton!

7.23.2023-4.15.2024 for the rest

I remember really wanting to paint a lighthouse and doing a lot of lighthouse thumbnails, sketching on my porch looking up at birds and planes, shifts at the boba place, and going through a breakup. 2023-2024, you wild card, you.

I thought I’d switch things up and post some art. I discovered about 2 sketch books and a few odd pieces here and there I wanted to share, get ready for a small spam!
A lot of these first pieces were done during my UNT days living in Denton.
