THE CORRESPONDENT - Virginia Evans (@virginia.l.evans)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pace: Slow, Reflective | Genre: Lit Fic | Spice: 🫑 (clean)
Format: Immersive (Audio + Ebook) - I truly feel that this is the ONLY way to consume this book. Although, if I had to choose just one.. audio all the way. It’s done with a full cast and I thought all the narrators represented their characters so well/really brought them to life.

Synopsis: Sybil recounts the details of her life through writing to loved ones, strangers, authors… really anyone and everyone…

💭 This book isn’t loud, flashy or action packed. It’s quiet, reflective and introspective. Upon finishing this book, I was filled with so many thoughts and feelings that it’s hard to put them all into words. What I can tell you, is that, Sybil’s story has grabbed my heart so much that I feel deeply connected to a fictional character and if that’s not powerful writing… I’m not sure what is. This book made me laugh, cry (a lot) and overall just felt so wholesome and comforting to read. I thought the narration style (being told entirely through letters) was captivating and I loved how complex/layered and DEEPLY HUMAN our main character was. This book wouldn’t appeal to everyone, but for me, this was a complete win and will live forever in my heart. It truly just felt like having a conversation with my Grandmother again, and that’s quite the gift.

What you’ll find:
📮Epistolary Novel
📮Reflective
📮Aging, Grief, Regrets and Grace
📮Character Driven
📮Complex, Layered Characters

✨If you love a book that reminds you of what it means to be human and emphasizes slowing down and making connections, this is one for you! ✨

SHEPHERD KING DUOLOGY - Rachel Gillig
One Dark Window & Two Twisted Crowns
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I know what I know, my secrets are deep, but long have I kept them, and long will they keep.”

Pace: Medium | Genre: Gothic Romantasy
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (Average between both books)
Format: Physical Books

Synopsis: Elspeth discovers a world of shadow and deception when she joins a quest to cure her town of the mist and the darkness within it…

💭 After seeing all the hype for this duology I finally tried it… immediate 5 stars. This was the perfect blend of romance and fantasy, with a refreshingly unique magic system, compelling characters and vivid gothic/eerie imagery. It hooks you immediately and you won’t be able to put it down. Also, I genuinely think this duology would appeal to non-fantasy readers too, there’s just something for everyone here. I’m so impressed by this debut and I can’t wait to read her other books… Knight and the Moth I’m looking at you 👀.

What you’ll find:
♦️Gothic/Eerie atmosphere
♦️Unique magic system
♦️Magical Quest
♦️Generational Secrets
♦️Enemies to Lovers

PROMISE ME SUNSHINE - Cara Bastone
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pace: Medium | Genre: Romance | Spice: 🌶️
Format: Audio/Kobo — LOVED the audio, this story is mainly dialogue and the narrator did an amazing job at bringing these characters to life in the best way!

Synopsis: After the death of her best friend, Lenny learns how to live in a world without her…

💭 Infinity stars - I have absolutely zero negative things to say. This story deals heavily with grief and I was nervous the author would come about this topic the wrong way… NOPE. Cara Bastone navigates the complexity of loss with so much grace, capturing every raw emotion and wrapping it in a truly beautiful story. There was nothing cheesy or gimicky about this love story it was just… perfect. I cried, I laughed, I learned so much about life after loss and I healed parts of myself I didn’t know needed healing. This will be one of those books that I recommend forever. Thank you @carabastone for writing this complete masterpiece.

What you’ll find:
💛 Friends to Lovers
💛 Emotional Slow Burn
💛 Grief and Healing
💛 Banter/Playful Moments
💛 Extremely lovable characters (the way our MMC shows up for her is unlike anything I’ve ever read).

✨If you love character-driven romances with more emotion/depth behind them… I urge you to pick this one up… seriously right now, go read it. ✨ by @pockets.of.reading

🖤⚡️THRESHING DAY ⚡️🖤

I will always have a special place in my heart for this series… the one that started it all. I seriously haven’t been this excited to buy a new book in a long time but when I saw these illustrations, I couldn’t resist. I cannot wait to dive back into this world.

Also, before you come for me, I know what’s missing from this photo and I need to buy it. BUT this book/lighting combo was too beautiful not to share, so for now, here we are 😉.

If Liz Tomforde writes it, we will read it. The three of us may agree that the Windy City series is the best sports romance series of all time, but we clearly have different favorite books and characters. Apparently agreeing on every aspect of this series was too much to ask 😂

On the plus side, we never need to fight over our Windy City book boyfriends!

Swipe to see our preferences and let us know in the comments who you agree with more! 🤩

📖 SYNOPSIS
The creator of a virtual world, The OASIS leaves behind an Easter egg. Whoever discovers the Easter egg will win his fortune…

💭 MY THOUGHTS
Let me start by saying, I am not really a gamer and I was definitely not the target audience for this book. I reluctantly picked it up and WOW, am I glad I did. It’s described as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets The Matrix and that’s very accurate.

This book pulled me in from the very beginning. It was immersive, engaging, and just so much fun to read. While it does lean a little more YA, with simpler world-building and concepts, that didn’t bother me at all. I loved the way the plot unfolded and was genuinely intrigued by our main character. He’s just a guy, depressed with his reality, who finds solace and escape in a virtual world.

The found family was wholesome and the 80s pop culture references added so much to the atmosphere. I found the world immersive, the characters likeable and the plot engaging. What more could you want!

Happy Fall 🍂🍁

I swear September hit and there was a chill in the air and suddenly it’s dark earlier again too. Although I’m not a fan of the colder weather, I do love cozying up with a great book and fall is kind of perfect for that ☕️.

Saw @jillsreadingbooks do this one and loved it.

The books on that first page are all 4.5/5 star reads for me.. with my personal favourite being Bones. If you’ve read any on my want to read, let me know which to prioritize! 🤓

SYNOPSIS
📖 Childhood friends, Sam and Ari, reunite on opposite sides of a class war…

💭 MY THOUGHTS
WHY did it take me so long to pick this up?! Now we know, if @molly.has.hobbies recommends it, read it.

This book was absolutely the perfect balance between strong engaging plot, emotional impact and believable slow-burn romance. I loved the magic system, characters, plot… honestly, everything. The writing was very strong and the narrator was unreal.

I especially loved the strong message in this about the downfall greed/striving for power can have on you.

ALSO THE ENDING? A cliffhanger that sets the stage for book two PERFECTLY. I have nothing bad to say… absolutely can not wait for book number 2 (Silver Dawn which releases April 2027). Pick this one up, you won’t regret it!

THE BURNING SIDE - @sarahdamoff
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Format: I did this on audiobook and it was brilliantly done but if I did it again, I’d do a physical read. So many wonderful quotes would make this a powerful one to annotate.

Synopsis: After 9 years of marriage, Leo and April have a sudden house fire that forces them to work together to repair the damage of not only their house, but what’s left of their relationship…

💭I am so happy that I found Sarah Damoff’s books. Her multi-generational, full-circle stories leave me feeling everything from hopefulness to heartache to overwhelming joy. This story, in particular, weaves together two love stories, each facing its own trials and heartbreaks, in a way that feels deeply and undeniably human. It was raw, honest, and featured some of the most powerful portrayals of Alzheimer’s, marriage, motherhood and postpartum depression that I’ve ever read. Damoff seems to have an extraordinary understanding of human emotion and resilience, and she writes both with such vivid authenticity. Her stories are never romanticized, but rather, rooted in devastating reality. In a world where everything is curated to “seem” a certain way or to display a polished version of reality, it’s truly refreshing to read something so real and innately human. This book is a beautiful reminder of life, what truly matters at the core of it all, and the importance of always remembering where you came from. 🏠❤️

What you’ll find:
🔥Multi-Generational Family Drama
🔥Marriage in Crisis
🔥Postpartum Representation
🔥Alzheimer’s Representation
🔥Childhood Trauma

✨ If you’re looking for a book that confronts the reality of life and love head on and will really make you FEEL something… this is definitely for you! ✨ by @pockets.of.reading

🎧 P.S I Hate You - @laurenconnollyromance
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5)

Genre: Contemporary Romance | Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Format: I did this one on audio it was so well done!

Synopsis: Before Maddie’s brother passed away he wrote a series of letters to her and his best friend, Dom. They were instructed to spread his ashes through various states (the ones he never had the chance to visit 🥺), the only catch, they had to go on the journey together, despite their complicated past…

💭 Well after putting this off for far too long, I finally read it and I’m so happy I did. This was a second chance trope done BRILLIANTLY. I loved both our main characters but my favourite character overall, would have to be, Josh (The Brother). You’ll just have to read it to find out why 🤭. While mostly lighthearted, it is clear that our FMC uses sarcasm to deflect feelings/reality a lot which I found SO relatable to read and I really appreciated this very “real” character trait. Overall, such a cute concept for a book. My heart is full and I think this would make such a great movie 🥰.

What you’ll find:
🗺️ Road Trip
🗺️ Brother’s Best Friend
🗺️ Second Chance
🗺️ Grief and Self Discovery

Why it wasn’t a 5 star read:
👎🏼 LOVED this book but I found the FMC to be a little dramatic/immature in the third act. Such a minor thing, definitely still worth the read.

✨If you’re looking for a cute read that reminds you how important the power of connection is, this is one for you! ✨

🌸 MAY READING WRAP-UP: Read if/My thoughts 🌸

May was such a fun month with beautiful weather, gardening, golfing, bike rides with the kids and so many more family memories. Reading wise, 11 books finished, 1 DNF and 1 I’m still reading (A Forsaken Prophecy which I am LOVING, just haven’t had as much physical reading time as I would like).

My stand out this month was, without a doubt, The Bright Years - Sarah Damoff. If you haven’t read it, I urge you to pick it up!!

Tell me, what was the best book you read it may? 🤓 by @pockets.of.reading

Play Along - Liz Tomforde
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5)

Genre: Contemporary Romance | Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️Format: Audiobook. This is dual narration, but it seriously feels like a duet. Each narrator seamlessly impersonates the other so well, very well done.

Synopsis: What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas…

💭 This series just keeps on GIVING. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have met my favourite book boyfriend of the series… Isaiah Rhodes. The combo of his goofy, doesn’t take life too seriously personality, with her straight arrow perfectionist vibe worked perfectly. I absolutely adored these two, the way their story started and what it turned into. I will say, this one didn’t have QUITE as much heart as Caught Up did, but what it lacked it deep emotion (and don’t get me wrong, it still made me cry), it made up for in playful banter. Seriously the kind that has you screaming and kicking your feet!! Absolutely can not wait to read the next book in the series, but sad my Windy City journey is coming to an end soon. 🥺.

What you’ll find:
💜 Marriage of Convenience
💜 He falls first
💜 Perfectionist FMC + Golden Retriever MMC
💜 Sports Romance

👎🏼 Why it wasn’t a 5 star read:
While I loved this story, I did feel it was lacking plot at points. I could have done with more fun moments, like shown in the beginning of the book, sprinkled throughout.

✨ If you love a book where the guy chases the girl, may I introduce you to… Play Along. ✨

🤔 Are you more rigid, have a planner and stick to it or more go with the flow, whatever will be will be? If you know me, you definitely know my answer 😅. by @pockets.of.reading
