Riverside Poetry Writing Group- In Person | Saturday | July 25 | 12-1:30pm ET

This month, interdisciplinary artist Sarah Cameron Sunde @scsunde will lead a workshop exploring poetry, place, and long-term thinking in relation to local waters and sea-level rise. As part of her ongoing research for a new public artwork in Battery Park City that launches during Climate Week, we will explore what makes an evocative poetic question and write responses inspired by the waterfront. Together, we’ll consider how language can deepen our relationship to place, expand our sense of time, and help us imagine more resilient futures. Desire, Myth, and the White‑Hot Center: A Two-Day Immersion in Poetic Craft and Critique

In this two-session seminar and workshop, we’ll gather at summer’s white‑hot center to think about how poems hold desire: urgent, unrequited, ecstatic, impossible. We’ll move from classical myth to contemporary work, reading poets who write into longing, desire, and the complicated layers of love and human connection.

The first meeting will be part close-reading, part generative lab. We’ll read poems together (mythic, lyric, and otherwise unruly) and respond to them through a series of prompts that invite you to write from your own sense of urgency, distance, fantasy, intimacy, heartbreak, and ecstasy, and so forth.

The second meeting will be a workshop devoted to your drafts. Together, we’ll talk about how to deepen emotional stakes, focus imagery, and make space on the page for contradictory feelings. By the end of the weekend, you’ll leave with new poems, a set of prompts you can return to all summer, and renewed ways of thinking about desire, connection, and what it means to draw from the white‑hot center in your own work.

Saturday & Sunday (8 hours over 2 days) | July 25 – 26 | 12 – 4pm ET | $275 ($220 for Members)
(Jul 25, 26)

Craft Session: And I Eat Men Like Air: Horror as a Meaning-Making Device with Erika Walsh
Remote Craft Session | Thursday | Jul 23 | 7-9pm ET

Horror always means something. Horror movies serve to either subvert or uphold, implicitly or explicitly, tropes rooted in systemic racism, misogyny, xenophobia, transphobia, heteronormativity, class disparity, and more. This pattern has become increasingly evident as real-life horrors such as the global rise of fascism have erupted and, simultaneously, horror movies and shows have become increasingly popular, perhaps in part as a way of pointing to, challenging, and attempting to make sense of these modern brutalities.

This class will examine, through a queer, feminist lens, how conventions of the horror genre such as body horror, ecological horror, and domestic terror reflect the historical, social, and political contexts of our lives. We will discuss the use of horror tropes and conventions in the work of contemporary poets such as Dorothea Lasky, Kiki Petrosino, Patricia Smith, torrin a. greathouse, and Natalie Eilbert, alongside horror films such as I Saw the TV Glow, Get Out, Obsession, Rosemary’s Baby, and Jennifer’s Body, as well as write and workshop our own horror-inspired pieces.

Remote 2-Hour Craft Session | Thursday | July 23 | 7-9pm ET | $60 ($55 for Members)

This remote class will take place on Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to you by a staff member in the week leading up to the class start date.

All are welcome, space is limited. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Please email support@poetshouse.org with any questions. By attending or participating in this program, you agree to abide by our Community Agreement.
