While health experts and nondancers might call neutral knee alignment perfectly straight, the ballet industry often favors the aesthetic that a few degrees of hyperextension creates. Dancers without hyperextended knees may covet the swooping leg lines they see in their favorite professional dancers, or in the student next to them at barre. However, having straight knees can mean better stability and balance. Plus, plenty of dancers have been able to work with their anatomy to achieve fully stretched lines. “Black Swan,” the Darren Aronofsky movie thriller that catapulted ballet into pop culture (while ruffling many dancers’ feathers), just made its stage premiere, 16 years after hitting the silver screen. “Black Swan”—the musical by Jen Silverman, with lyrics and score by Dave Malloy—officially opened on June 3 at Harvard University’s Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Presented by @americanrep, the production plays through July 12. With @sonyatayeh at the helm as director and choreographer, many in the dance industry have high hopes for the show.@pointemagazineofficial recently spoke with “Black Swan” ensemble dancer @avanoble, a Broadway alum and graduate of @usckaufman. Noble is also understudying the musical’s lead role of Nina Sayers (played by Melanie Moore), and she shares what it’s like to bring the movie’s story to the stage at the link in our bio. 🦢📝: @classylassy101 📸: Ava Noble (left, in green leotard) and fellow members in rehearsal for A.R.T’s production of “Black Swan.” Photo by @maggie_ftw, courtesy @americanrep. 📸: Sonya Tayeh addresses the ensemble in a rehearsal of “Black Swan.” Photo by @maggie_ftw, courtesy @americanrep. 📸: In rehearsal for A.R.T’s production of “Black Swan.” Photo by @maggie_ftw, courtesy @americanrep. #BlackSwan #BlackSwanMusical #Balletdancers #Musical @this_panda_is_sad Descriptions in comments. by @pointemagazineofficial

Over the past few years, @houstonballet soloist @jac_long has been steadily growing her presence as a choreographer while regularly dancing lead roles. Since 2018, Long has created several works, but “Illuminate,” her 2023 breakout ballet for the company, revealed her ability to use ballet vocabulary to create buoyant ease and deftly shape intricate patterns in space.Long’s trajectory as a dancemaker has continued since then. At the moment, Long is focusing on her world premiere “Moving Forces,” debuting June 13 as part of the Nocturnes: Pointeworks III program in San Diego featuring the nonprofit ballet company @pointe_works. Taking place at The Conrad Theater, the program also includes a new work by @thekeeratikid. Between creating a world premiere and rehearsing multiple roles in Houston Ballet’s end-of-season “Giselle” production, Long took the time to speak with @pointemagazineofficial on her evolution as a choreographer. Chatting with @lucienpost, it’s immediately apparent that he’s a deep thinker. The @pacificnorthwestballet principal dancer has done a lot of introspection and self-reflection—skills that he now imparts to others through his work as a life coach. But he also trusts his gut, especially when it comes to major career moves. So when he was making the decision to retire from performing after 23 years (announced almost a year ago, well in advance of his final bow this month on June 7), Postlewaite tells @pointemagazineofficial that, “through that process of listening, being quiet with myself,” he simply knew that now was the right time. We recently spoke with the 42-year-old as he prepares for his final show during PNB’s Season Encore Performance. Last year, @BalletX artistic director @christineccox was asked to envision a new forward-looking ballet for a program celebrating America’s 250th at Philadelphia’s @highmarkmann Center for the Performing Arts. For the program, co-commissioned with ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 Festival, Cox landed on the idea of reimagining Vivaldi’s 1723 composition, “The Four Seasons.” She commissioned a new score by @dandeacon, who composes electronic music, and reached out to four different choreographers—Morgann Runacre-Temple, Penny Saunders, Jamar Roberts, and Trey McIntyre—who each chose one season. For Cox, integrating four different voices in one ballet captured nature’s unpredictability, and the artistic team met several times over Zoom to discuss its overall look and flow. “The Four Seasons Reimagined” will debut at the Highmark Mann in Philadelphia (June 4–5) before touring to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, on June 11.Learn more at the link in our bio. 📝: @kirouette 📸: @skylerhannah and @benschwarzz rehearse “The Four Seasons Reimagined.” Photo by @vikkisloviterphoto, courtesy BalletX.📸: @jerardpalazo and artists of BalletX rehearse “The Four Seasons Reimagined.” Photo by @vikkisloviterphoto, courtesy BalletX.📸: Photo by Jean Park, courtesy BalletX.#TheFourSeasonsReimagined #BalletX #Ballet #TheFourSeasons @morgannrtemple @pennyfix @jamarrobertsofficial @treymcintyreprojects Descriptions in comments. by @pointemagazineofficial

This June, the Stockholm Archipelago will become the stage for a new dance festival: Midsommardans, whose inaugural season is led by a women-led team of emerging artists.Held on the island of Grinda during Sweden’s Midsummer celebration, Midsommardans bringstogether an international group of dance artists for a weekend of performance, artistic dialogue, community engagement, and celebration. Founded and directed by dancers Emma Wheeler andLily Peta, the festival was conceived as a platform for young artists to explore, collaborate, andpresent work outside conventional performance spaces.Drawing upon Sweden’s distinctive geography and the ephemeral beauty of its light-filledsummer, Midsommardans is an artistic extension of the Swedish celebration of light, warmth, and rebirth. The festival’s mission is rooted in an exploration of how dance and music can evokethis tangible joy and, through a partnership with Skärgårdsstiftelsen, is committed to naturalpreservation and accessibility in its performances. As artists and audiences gather amid the landscape of Grinda on June 20, Midsommardans offersa compelling example of how a new generation of cultural leaders is reimagining the relationshipbetween performance, community, and environment.Learn more @midsommar.dans, www.midsommardans.org#Midsommardans #DanceFestival #EmergingArtists #WomenLed #StockholmArchipelago by @pointemagazineofficial
