On September 21, 1938, a hurricane made landfall on Long Island moving at nearly 50 miles per hour, so fast that the Weather Bureau had no time to issue adequate warnings before it hit. Known as the Long Island Express, it came ashore at Suffolk County as a Category 3 with sustained winds of 115 mph. On Fire Island, residents were still in their summer homes, winterizing and wrapping up the season. Nobody had been evacuated. The Village of Saltaire had actually leveled its own dunes earlier that summer for better ocean views, leaving the community completely exposed. The storm cut four new openings into Shinnecock Bay, permanently creating Shinnecock Inlet, and reshaped the entire south shore coastline. 45 people died on Long Island, with 29 of those fatalities at Westhampton Beach alone. Within eight days, Robert Moses was at a press conference announcing a 43-mile parkway from Fire Island Inlet to Southampton, using the disaster as cover to push a plan that locals had already been fighting for years. We've got a nor'easter brewing right now that may or may not amount to much, but this time of year always has a way of reminding you what these barrier islands are really up against.

On August 20, 1964, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill that would establish Fire Island National Seashore, with the Senate following the next day. President Johnson signed it into law on September 11, 1964, preserving 4,300 acres and 25 miles of shoreline. It almost went the other way. For years, Robert Moses had been pushing a four-lane parkway straight through Fire Island, which would have wiped out all 17 communities on the island. A Dunewood resident named Maurice Barbash and his brother-in-law Irving Like formed the Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore, and over two years mounted a grassroots campaign, speaking at Kiwanis Clubs, running petition drives, writing letters to Congress, and turning both public opinion and eventually Governor Rockefeller against Moses. Moses, who had built Jones Beach, the LIE, and dozens of parks across New York, suffered one of the only defeats of his career. The island you take the ferry to today exists because a group of South Shore locals decided to fight for it.

We'll be in the heart of Ocean Beach tomorrow for our favorite event of the year. Been working hard (with the help of @lee.and.company ) to create some truly amazing one-of-a-kind pieces crafted from reclaimed sails that have spent years on the Great South Bay. Decorated with illustrations by @rachel.cool of some real Long Island favorites, hand cut from sails and other materials. Lots more to come, but super limited. Hop on the ferry and come visit us. We'll be across from @townpizzaoceanbeach . See you there!
