On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we gathered with our friends at @newyorkcares and @911day to unite for good.

We had the pleasure to serve alongside NY State Senator @kirstengillibrand, Walter Montaigne, Dan Vallone, William Villafranco and Justin Stewart from @myfaceorg , Kelly Goodejohn, Laura Rog, and Points of Light staff.

The spirit of service that emerged after September 11 reminds us that even in our most difficult moments, we have the power to choose connection, compassion and care.

In recognition of the 9/11 National Day of Service, The Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. showed what it means to step forward, work together, and serve our community.

Their dedication brought meaningful improvements to Wesley Community Center and reminded us that honoring the past can inspire action today.

Honoring 9/11 through service. ❤️
On Friday, volunteers came together to give their time to build 50 Kynd Kits for those in need, turning remembrance into meaningful action. This 9/11 Day of Service was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Phillips 66 and in partnership with Points of Light.

As President and CEO of Points of Light, Jennifer Sirangelo has spent her career making the case that service is more than generosity—it is a way to build stronger communities, deepen civic connection, and create purpose. From Boys & Girls Clubs to the National 4-H Council and now Points of Light, she has championed the idea that people who take responsibility for their communities can help strengthen our country more broadly.

At Points of Light, Sirangelo has set ambitious goals to expand volunteerism, increase the number of people engaged in service, and make it easier for people of all backgrounds and generations to participate. Her vision reflects a larger belief: that a stronger culture of service is an investment in the civic health of our country—and a way to bring people together at a time when so much is pulling us apart.

In this episode of the SALA Series, host Basil Smikle sits down with Sirangelo to explore how volunteerism can combat loneliness, rebuild civic trust, and bridge political and social divides. Wilmer Valderrama embodies the power of service and what it means to be a point of light in the world. This October, we’ll honor him with the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards, which celebrates those who live out the enduring legacy of President George H.W. Bush through volunteering and service.

Wilmer Valderrama is an actor, producer, and activist. He is the co-founder of Harness, a group dedicated to connecting communities through conversation to inspire action and power change; serves on the board of Voto Latino and is co-chair of their artist coalition; spokesperson for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and founder of their Ready 2 Lead program; and sits on the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s (NHMC) Visionary Alliance. He is also deeply involved with the military community, serving as a USO Global Ambassador

Wilmer, alongside our other honorees, show what’s possible when purpose meets action and why service continues to move communities forward.
