What do you know about "polako"? The Montenegrin lifestyle? The passage of time? A memorable word? Or does it simply mean "slow, leisurely"? This all probably holds true, but "polako" is so much more to us, and now we feel the need to share our story.
So, the polako-story, part one.

Summer 2015
After graduating from university, Matvey Krylov, tired of a large number of projects and having got fed up with the abundance of exhibitions and various events, decided to downshift. Inspired by the Guy Debord’s philosophy of situationism, he settled in a workshop and planned to make art in a dosed, more thoughtful and high-quality way. That is when Matvey's “Never Work” project began to take shape.

The inspiration for the project was derived from seminal works of major artists, such as Paul Lafargue's essay "The Right To Be Lazy", Bertrand Russell's essay "In Praise of Idleness", Kazimir Malevich's treatise "Laziness as the Truth of Mankind", Maurizio Lazzarato's book "Marcel Duchamp and the Refusal to Work", Mladlen Stilinovich's manifesto "The Praise of Laziness".
Zen Buddhists were also aware of the benefits of laziness: the highest philosophical principle of Taoism is wu-wei, or “non-action”: a person who has gained true spiritual enlightenment and wisdom lives a conspicuously low-effort life.

“I confess my love to laziness for providing me with the life ethics - I knew I was a careless vagabond who never believed in the primacy of labour. Resisting the crazy market, I freeze in “no-doing” in order to determine the reasons for the formation of a consumer society and form my own unique style”, - with these words, Matvey plunged into the work on a project that went on to develop far beyond his homeland.

In a previous post we began to tell you the story of "polako", how Matvey Krylov was introduced to the concept of a slow life and began its implementation in contemporary art.

Spring 2016
Matvey received an invitation to Montenegro to an art residence in Kotor (the former Jugooceanija building), where he pitched the “Never Work” project to the curator of the art center. He began to get acquainted with the country and culture of Montenegro, which merely prompted and confirmed the relevance of the chosen topic.

The exhibition featured hand-made streamers and banners designed in the communist style, as well as a long table for party congresses and meetings, a tribune and “red” state flags. The exhibition was opened by Petr Chukovich - an art historian and former director of the National Museum of Montenegro.

“This is a perfect example of what art historians call “working on site” – in a specific place, on a specific case, and drawing on a specific existential experience. The space that Matvey Krylov revived opens before the viewer a brilliant, bright, young intellectual, who comes from a certain “culture of situationism”. The follower of Guy Debord and “The Society of the spectacle" is a man who reflects on his situation as a man who left his country, through an encounter with an experience that comes from the context of an anecdote about 10 commandments, that says how lazy Montenegrins are, how they don’t like to work. He turned this humorous context into a very serious work, which came to thematize laziness and idleness as the genuine value of humanity. The great Kazimir Malevich wrote "…no-one understood laziness as the truth, having branded it 'mother of vices' when it is the mother of life,” - explained Chukovich, speaking to the public gathered at the exhibition.

This project was later exhibited several more times as part of other exhibitions and expositions. Then, for the first time, the idea to make a trial series of t-shirts came up. Thanks to the exhibition's popularity, the rumor quickly spread between expatriates and locals. We had to reprint several times - so the polako project materialized and headed for spreading the idea of a slow life. taken in POLAKO by @polakoin

Imagine that you moved to Montenegro and decided to open your own small cafe or to start a small production, or maybe a music business - the first name that springs to mind is, naturally, "polako". But not so fast! In previous posts, we told the story of how Matvey Krylov, exploring laziness, integrated it into art. In the third and final part, we will talk about the power of art and what prospects it opens up for society.

Autumn 2017 - Winter 2020
Polako t-shirts have become an essential attribute of club stories and illegal parties. You could just meet a person wearing one of those in the street, and for a while we didn't produce anything else. Having formed a small international community, we decided to start organizing something more, something different from our small events for our clique. We managed to throw a festival and several major bookings, everything looked very promising, to say the least, but then came the Covid.

Spring 2020
This troubled time was spent building social ties for joint development. We cooperated and shared love for Montenegro, which remained a beautiful country, where even without a plague one can always pause and take a break.

Summer 2021 After lockdown
After a short hiatus, the POLAKO team was replenished with new members, who are working today, developing the brand and leading the promo group of the same name.

In August 2022, we launched our telegram chat, which will soon see its first thousand participants. Over the past year, we have expanded the range of merch we produce. In the future, we will add new items to our line, we will also re-release rings and present new pins. We plan to design our own version of hoodies and universal caps.

Summer 2023 "You are here"
We are glad that polako has taken root and everyone uses it. We believe that it should bring everyone only joy and love. Come to our concert - there you can buy our merch. In the meantime, listen to our channel of the same name on the soundcloud, the link is in the profile description, where we publish the music of our residents.

U znak zahvalnosti Crnoj Gori organizuju akcije čišćenja rijeka, jezera, šuma i obale.

Ovakve aktivnosti pomažu adaptaciji i integraciji u lokalnu zajednicu kroz upoznavanje sa kulturom, ekologijom i istorijom Crne Gore, stvarajući snažnu povezanost i istinsku uključenost u život zemlje.

Lako ćete ih prepoznati – u prslucima, sa hvataljkama i kesama za smeće, kao i opremom za gašenje šumskih požara. Njihov karnevalski kostim nije maska. To je njihova svakodnevna oprema.
