Calling all dancers from the African diaspora Unlock Your Ancestral Library: A Talawa Technique™️ weekend intensive After a beautiful first edition in Amsterdam, we’re bringing our second intensive to Brussels. Join us for two days of training, grounding, and connection through Talawa Technique™️, the first professionalized dance method in Europe specifically developed to unlock the ancestral library of the Black body. This intensive offers a space where dancers from Africa and the African diaspora can train from our own centers, reconnect with embodied knowledge and deepen the relationship with movement, rhythm and community. Whether you’re a professional dancer or simply feel called to move, you are warmly invited to participate. As part of the weekend, we’ll also gather for a Community Dinner & Jam on October 24. Calling all movers from the African diaspora. Join Unlock Your Ancestral Library: A Talawa Technique™ Weekend Intensive with master teacher and Tabanka principal dancer @joel.ramirez1 Joel Ramirez is a principal dancer, soloist, rehearsal director, and educator with the Tabanka Dance Ensemble. With over 15 years of experience in the company, he focuses on the teaching and transmission of Circum-Caribbean and West African dance vocabularies, both contemporary and epistemic. Joel is a certified instructor of the Talawa Technique and works closely with artistic director Dr. Thomas Talawa Prestø, contributing to the development of pedagogy, repertoire, and choreography for the company. As rehearsal director, he mentors dancers while maintaining the technical and artistic integrity of the work. Known for his clarity, depth of knowledge, and commitment to embodied learning, Joel is a sought-after teacher who shares his expertise with dancers and institutions internationally. Calling all movers from the African diaspora Next week we are continuing with the Polycentric Pulse sessions. Leading these sessions: @jomecia After 10 years of training and another 10 performing on international stages, she realized there was an untapped potential in her body that established institutions weren’t activating. In West Africa, at École des Sables, she met Dr. Thomas Talawa Prestø. This was the start of her journey to decolonize her movement and to rediscover her why. As a certified Talawa instructor Jomecia has gained a clear vision of how to bridge the gap between technical excellence and ancestral wisdom. She doesn’t just teach steps; she deconstructs movement to discover the unique quality in every person she teaches. In Patois, Talawa means resilient and strong. The Talawa Technique™ uniquely combines elements of African and Caribbean dances to train polycentrism, multiple movement qualities, grounding, and polyrhythms separately. Talawa Technique™ incorporates rhythmic structures, a specialized approach to grounding, and traditional African aesthetic movement qualities such as: trembling, waving, and pulsing. The pursuit is not only technical excellence but also an understanding of polycentricity and polyrhythm as essential elements.
