Underrated Rewind:At Oakland Tech (CA), Anthony Alonzo was a 5’11”, 175-pound athlete who dominated all three phases of the game — offense, defense, and special teams. Every time he stepped on the field, he made his presence felt.On defense, Alonzo was a violent, physical safety with elite instincts and toughness. He flew downhill to stop the run, delivered punishing hits, and covered ground in the secondary like a true field general. He set the tone for the Bulldogs’ defense — smart, fearless, and always around the football.On offense, he was special with the ball in his hands. As a running back, Alonzo had the rare blend of elusiveness, vision, and raw power. The senior closed out his HS football career as a national champion with the Monarchs. Talan stands 6’1 320lbs with nimble/quick feet and a powerful punch. With a background in powerlifting, it’s no wonder why he easily moves and displaces defenders with great leverage. The source for UNDERRATED high school football players: @theunderrateddatabase Underrated Rewind: Howard Gauta was a do-it-all type athlete. The former Loara Saxons star led his team to a 10-2 record as a senior by playing everything, literally. During the 2011 season, Gauta spent time at QB where he passed for 7 TDs. He was a legitimate running threat as evidenced by his rushing totals of 1,629 yards rushing (153.9 ypg) with a whopping 29 TDs. Averaged a first down per carry at 10.78 ypc and a had a long of 80 yards. Gauta wasn’t just extending plays from the backfield or taking designed runs to the house as a dual threat QB, he actually lined up at running back and continued to do damage. As a receiver, he hauled in 21 receptions for a total of 384 yards and 6 TDs with a long reception of 94 yards. Defensively, he totaled 37 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 INTs, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 pass deflections. Could’ve easily been one of the best defensive prospects as a DB as well. Picked off 6 passes a sophomore before the offensive showcase he would display over the last two years of his HS career. His talent has been passed down to his son, Oakland, who has the makings of a national blue chip recruit when it’s all said and done. He has been a force just like his father. Oakland continues to be a man amongst boys by producing highlight after highlight while playing older competition. He is clearly one of the more advanced players his age on both sides of the ball. While Oakland probably won’t fly under the radar as a prospect, it’s easy to see where he gets his game from. The source for UNDERRATED high school football players: @theunderrateddatabase Sione Vailea is a great example of what a student athlete should look like. He’s an honors student (4.2 GPA) and is number one in his class currently. His academics alone should open up doors for him at the college level. On the field, Vailea won a state title as a 13 year old freshman starter on a loaded McClymonds team that sent multiple players to the D1 level (21-22). He’s been dominating the scene since then as he has anchored an offensive line that has paved the way for consecutive thousand yards rushers in Jaivian Thomas (now at Cal), Tajir Golden, and soon to be Sharky Tamale. Although Oakland high school football gets labeled as “small school ball” due to low roster numbers, there is nothing small about Sione’s game. He can play at any level and would probably start for any team in the state. Sione Vailea has built up quite the resume over his entire high school career. The hope is that colleges will start to realize what they’ve been missing all along. The source for UNDERRATED high school football players: @theunderrateddatabase John Tamale, known as Sharky, has been a consistent presence at the varsity level after starting the past three seasons. As a sophomore, he was Mack’s leading tackler from the middle linebacker position. He had quite the showing in the state title game against Mater Dei Catholic High School (Chula Vista, CA). His junior year saw him play heavily from the rush end spot where he created a ton of pressure while also getting some time on the offensive side of the ball. Now a senior, Sharky has taken over as McClymonds main ball carrier while finding his way back to linebacker on defense. Mack has had success with speedy and explosive tailbacks the past couple of seasons. Sharky gives them a power running game feel as he has knack for barreling over defenders on his way to the end zone. The source for UNDERRATED high school football players: @theunderrateddatabase UC Davis got an absolute steal of a prospect in David Porotesano. The 2024 Oceanside graduate burst onto the recruiting scene during his final year in high school as his dominant senior film could not be ignored. This comes after he missed his entire junior season due to injury. His recruiting journey should inspire many student athletes who may be on a similar path as under the radar recruits. That path is one of where they force their way onto recruiting boards even if it’s “late” in the game. It is one where the talent is so undeniable that college coaches make room for a prospect no matter what. Porotesano’s journey challenges the norm of what the college football recruiting landscape has been like over the years. David’s journey provides hope for the “late bloomer” recruits who seem to come out of nowhere.
